Frank's Story

Thoughts on turning sixty on 23 November 2009 I haven't read the original "story" that is written below since I posted it and that must have been nine or so years ago as I launched what I hoped would be a successful new career right into the teeth of the dot com bust and recession. Disaster ensued, much was learned (mainly about my values and what is really important in life), and now I'm riding out this recession with a solid job with a solid company with a solid future. I also really enjoy my job, most of the time. Trouble is, it's in retail, so I make little money, work weird schedules, and I'm on my feet all the time, so my body, which turns sixty this month, will probably wear out before my need for a career ends. In the last decade my priorities have changed. I no longer seek a life partner (actively, anyway) and am thriving on my own with the help of a family of friends and a great Unitarian Universalist church community. As I turn sixty next weekend, I sure wish I had the sexy athletic body I had when I was fifty. (Those of you who remember me in PE back in the day will just have to take my word for it!) Now, as a saggy, baggy old bear, I value time with my friends, the company of my outrageous cat, D-Day,the unmatchable views of the Santa Cruz Mountains from my fifth=floor downtown San Jose home, and the stuff I do through my liberal church to make the world better for the little ones coming up. I don't suppose anyone will read what I write here but writing always helps me clarify: My thoughts, life, the universe, etc. Maybe someday I'll be able to make some money with my writing or speaking. I'll update this someday, I suppose, and we'll see what's what th...Expand for more
en. Best wishes to any classmates who might read this. High school both was and was not a good time in my life. I still tell stories of the good side of it and don't talk about the dark side of it much. The past is always there to mine for new lessons but, for me, the present is brilliant and joyful, and I just can't wait for the future! End of present. The below is past. Life I went right from high school into college at San Jose State. I wish that I had been mature enough then to take it seriously. I was a hippie for a while, if you can imagine, and then found a job I stayed with for 24 years, emerging, even as Rip Van Winkle, in late '96, with my native potential but few marketable skills. I found my way to a nonprofit with such a high turnover rate that it serves as a university of resume enhancement and now I am emerging from that toward a sales career where I'll be able to make some money and retire before I'm 100. I hope to be a good enough writer to make a second career of it by then. After decades of believing I was cut out to be single, I find that the opposite is true and I'm searching for a mate. I've come very close but still haven't found Mr. Right, so if you know of any presentable single men about our age, I'm a great catch and I cook, too! If we ever have another reunion I'll bring my guy with me. A total late bloomer, I found my athletic self in my thirties and turned out to be a pretty good runner, though I do more hiking now. If asked to name the best time of my life (it sure as HELL wasn't high school), I would say without hesitation that it's now. I'm loving my life (complete with AARP discounts) and the possibilities seem limitless.
