Frank's Story

Life 1975-78 LBW in Greenville-Alabama while working in X-Ray at the ol Stabler hospital. Troy State Montgomery 78-83 paid for all my education myself while working at the Alabama Dept of Education....Was volunteer of the year in 1982 for Montogomery Co.Youth Faculity working with troubled youth.A 2 page newspaper story on me at that time which I was very humbled.Also a Basketball coach at the East Y,Eastmont,and Boys Clubs.Did mission work with Eastmont that feed over 125 people at the Salvation Army with food that the kids grew down in Butler Co. just like the Indians did. Peace Corps 1986-87...English teacher and basketball coach and health care...Micronesia.......I started a basketball league with over 900 boys,20 coaches who had never seen a game on TV.Coached 4 tearms myself with locals as my Assts. My students were so poor that they had never eaten ice cream or coke....50 students in one class...NO LIGHTS,12 english books,outhouse,took a bath in the river with giant ells biting at my toes...Walking to my mail box was one hour one way Seoul-Korea...ELS in 1988 during the summer games which I got to enjoy.... 1990-91...Saudi Arabia,one hour from the Kuwait border...Before,during and after the gulf war....Teaching english at a University with scuds flying overhead.Wearing gas mask..Taking cold drinks to the army guys...Took pictures of the army guys and sending them back to their families.Over a 100 pictures,some of the pictures I sent were the last that their family ever saw.I was one our closer to the boarder than CNN. 1992-94....Chon-Ju..Korea..Teaching at a private school.I was the 1st white American they had ever seen.They had seen American video s and would greet me with F___ you...thinking it was just a HI...I overcame that and on my birthday before I left.I had 50 students and all 50 gave me such beautiful gifts and middle school students went to my home and cooked for me,put balloons up..It was beautiful!!2 small childern.A boy 9 and girl 11 were living in a box.They family had died.My manager asked me if I would take them in and I did.They stayed with me in a 3 bed-room apt.for over 5 months.I didnt cook for them but washed their clothes all week....They were so poor that they would eat all my candy and cereal up...Even drink all the milk....Not all was good.They had to survide on the streets by stealing so at my home.They would do the same if I left anything for them to steal...That was 1993..after they just up and left.Noone knew where or who with....I did hear a few years latter they a Uncle had picked them up and the girl told another stuent years latter how this big strange looking American had taken care of her and her brother when they had no other place...So I feel very good that I made a difference! 1994-95....DIS in Taiwan..Teaching english and basketball...Expand for more
... 1995-96...5 months teaching english in Melaysia.... 1996-98..Kochang Middle school.A place that hasnt changed since the 14th century as a ..English teacher.. 2,000-until 2010..Professor of English a Phyongtaek University...South Korea...I have over 400 students during a year...Korean and Chinaese. Have traveled all around the world.China 4 times,the Great Wall..Visited over 13 nations.Flew all the way around the world...Long way for a Country boy from Beat-1 Alabama.... My first book is published about my life in the Peace Corps Micronesia.The title is "A country boy s dream comes true"traveling the world by Edward Franklin Burkett with iUniverse.com...It took 15 years for that dream to come true....Hope to hear from all who remember me...Oh,how time and life flies..... Summer of 2,007 I went to Cambodia........It was like a trip I wasnt ready for.......I saw what killing is and I saw what happens when the world says nothing.....I saw what happens when good men keep silent......Millions and misslions of people are killed....Anyone with a Education,eye glasses,gold teeth,Mayors or any people of leadership.....All Killed........And above all,it took the Vietamese to come in and STOP THE KILLING..Not the US or the World or even The UN....Nobody seemed to care about those poor brown skin people who didnt have much of anything much less OIL....The nation the US fought for years and years......I saw middle schools filled to the top with legs,arms,skulls, of old and young....It was a site that will always live with me....... Summer 2,008 My University sent me to China I guess as a job well done.....I went with a group from out University.....We went to ShinYang China.....That the starting of the Great Wall.....I saw were President Nixon stood in 1972 when he visited China.....We then went on a River inside a big mountain.....We went deep inside the mountain on a boat....It was the real things,not like Disneyland ride^^ the water was so deep and clearn but no fish and so very cold but a very exciting trip......and the last stop was made was a SHOCKER for me.....We went up to the border with North Korea......We took a boat ride and went up the side of North Koreaa.......It was a middle school and kids were swimming,adult were working on boats but they didnt even notice us......and their were boats every 5 minutes leaving shore going to look at the North Koreans......Beside their was a bridge that had been bombed during the Korean war and a new bridge that Kim,Jong-Il ride when he travels to China or Russia...He wont fly^^, it was so wired in that I was told it was the same area that 500,000 Chinaese troops crossed when General Mc Arthur got to close to China........We stayed on week and if you ever get a chance? Try Peking Duck,its great as President Nixon also said in 1972.....
