Frank's Story

Life After graduation from high school I attended Northern Michigan University. Graduated from there in December 1991 Cum Laude with a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice. I worked as a Juvenile Corrections Officer until September 1993. I enlisted as a SPC in the United States Army, as a Military Police Officer. I spent three years in Germany and 2 years in Washington DC. I reclassed my job to 13F- Fire Support Specialist (Forward Observer/Field Artillery). In October 2000, I was accepted for Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2LT and Branched Field Artillery. I spent 3 Years with the 4th Infantry Division, 4-42 Field Artillery, Fort Hood, Texas. I was deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the 4ID. I also deployed as a part of the Surge in 2007-8 with the 82nd ABN. I was recently for 4 years stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina with the 82d Airborne Division. I was the Battery Commander for Headquarters and Headquarters Battery for 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment and came out of command recently. Yes, I did jump out of perfectly good airplanes flying at 800 feet above the ground with 100-150 pounds of gear, and yes at 0200 (2 am) in the morning and in the rain (but sometimes we jump in on beautiful days at 1pm, but not very often). I love it and it actually can be fun, but even better is on the drop zone when the Battalion of 105mm howitzers go into action, with the muzzle flashes lighting up the drop zone. I am a Jumpmaster, which entails supervising the safe exit of up to 100 Paratroopers out of a high performance Air Force aircraft. I cannot wait until I return to Bragg again. I am currently teaching Field Artillery Gunnery Skills to new 2LTs at the United States Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, OK. I should make Major in May and then take the position of the Operations Officer for the Battalion. I am married to a beautiful Christian Wife and have two lovely daughters. My wife, Tracie, is a housewife and the "General" of the house. We have been married for 17 years. My oldest daughter, Alex, is 16 and is a very good volleyball player who plays highschool and travel volleyball as well. She also attends the...Expand for more
U of M volleyball camp every summer. She is smart like her Mother and plans on attending U of M, Texas, or Concordia-Ann Arbor when she graduates and play volleyball. My youngest, Lisa, is 12 and loves sports as well and plays volleyball and softball. She is also an animal lover as well and right now desires to be a vet in the future. I am an avid runner and weight lifter. I run about 20-25 miles per week, and my soldiers have stated that I have gotten faster as I have gotten older. The best thing I did in my life was to join the military and love my job. (I've been in for 16 years and plan on staying until they kick me out or I stop having fun) As I see it, I do a difficult job, that most will not do, to protect the freedom of all Americans. Airborne!!! Hooah!!! School High School was just a stage in my life. I spent most striving to get to college and didn't strive to live the moment (I taught this to myself in college and while in the military, plus kids allow you to learn this also). I wish I would have done a few things different, but who doesn't. I wish for one I would have worked less and played more sports. Two I wish I would not have cared as much about what people thought about me or my father. I had some good friends, neutral friends, and some enemies (not many). My Dad retired from the school in March 2003, as I reflect, he was probably the best friend I had in school and to this day. And if you want any details of my life, just ask him, he'll tell you for sure; when they are in Michigan. (They live in Groveland, FL now) College I loved college. Studies were challenging and I liked that. Being in Marquette, Michigan I was in heaven. I love to hike, camp, ski, and mountain bike. Plus I got into long distance running. I loved running along Lake Superior, especially during the winter. I just wish I had started ROTC then, I'd be richer and a Major by now. But I met the best woman, who became my wife, there. Military Just read my Life Bio, The Army is my life. I tell all my soldiers that the Army is the Best Job In the World. And that they will realize this when they shed their civilian life and ways and make the Army their life.
