Frank's Story

I grew up in Charlestown but we moved to Medford when I was about 13 so I had a couple of years at the Lincoln before going up to "The Big House" (as we called it in junior high). I was in the "Sales" course at Medford High and got credit toward graduation for working (washing dishes) three afternoons a week rather than attend classes. I also worked weekends so I rarely took part in any school activities (but I still managed to have a good time during my years there). And I enlisted in the navy in February of '65 so I was actually already in the navy when we graduated in June and I went on active duty in August. I then spent about 18 months being shuffled around the country while in Radioman training and another 18 months in the Philippine Islands. My last year (or so) was spent on a destroyer (USS James E. Kyes) that took me to Vietnam in 1969. Looking back on it, I guess I always knew Vietnam would be the eventual destination for a kid who had to wash dishes in order to graduate. But I have no regrets. It actually worked out good for me. I really enjoyed my time in the navy and they taught me some skills that have allowed me to earn a decent living right up until this very day. I stayed in California for a short time after my hitch in the navy was up but I eventually came home (when I ran out of money) and went to work for the phone company in early 1970. In 1982, at age 34, I finally got married (a girl from Arl...Expand for more
ington) and we had a daughter in 1985. My daughter graduated from Hartford University with high honors and now works in Hartford, CT. She will turn thirty next years and is still the apple of my eye. Wow...where did those 30 years go? I also moved to New Hampshire when my daughter was born because I could not afford a house in the same area where I grew up. And I've never regretted that move. I earned an associates degree in Telecommunications in my early fifties and, shortly after that, I retired at age 55 (so I guess the main lesson I learned in college is that there is more to life than the rat race). During retirement, I joined a local bluegrass band and also produced a cable-access TV show. I also joined Netflix. Then, during the crash of 2008, I wound up going back to work and sitting just two cubicles away from the one I retired from six years earlier. The more things change... They laid me off in 2011 and I was not able to find another good job so I went on Social Security which, combined with my pension, is really all we need at this stage of the game. Also, I am probably bothering to update this profile at this particular time because I just had a heart attack scare but, as it turned out, my heart is in good shape for someone my age. So, as of now (April, 2014), I am still healthy and enjoying retirement. And I hope all my ex-classmates are also able to enjoy what's left of our so-called Golden Years.
