Fred's Story

I've gotten to the point in life where I realize that the purpose of my life has been to serve as a warning to others. I've consistently failed to meet the exceedingly low standards I set for myself. Seriously, though, I haven't done badly. After BPHS I went to college for a few years before burning out on school. I ended up in the Army for three years where I was assigned to Military Intelligence ( a contradiction in terms if there ever was one) performing counterintelligence duties. After the Army I became a Deputy Sheriff in LA County for a few years. I was finally able to finish my undergraduate degree part-time while working for LASD. I briefly served as a Criminal Investigator for what is now called NCIS (it was only NIS then) before gaining an appointment as a Special Agent in the FBI in 1979 where I remained for 30 years until my retirement five years ago. (Federal law enforcement has mandatory retirement at 57. The Director gave me a one year extension and then it was don't let your butt hit the door on your way out.) They do send me a comfortable pension check once a month though. I married Susan Oril in 1972 and we had two daughters, Jennifer and Courtney, before divorcing in 1983. I remarried in 1999 and we currently live in Irvine. My daughter Jen has three kids and they are currently living in Cameroon.
