Fred's Story

Life Hello to anyone reading this. I can barely negiciate this web-site but I thought I would join as our(my) 50th class reunion is approaching. I also logged into a couple of places where I taught and am excited to see the names of former students whom I valued then and since more than they could realize. At the 25th and 40th DHS reunions I attended I felt that if we consider our own lives to be important, then we must consider the people, places and events in our lives to be important, no mattter if we liked or disliked the experiences at the time. To catch you up, I atteded U of M(ichigan)receiving a Masters in Music after 6 years. I was in the Marching and Syphony Bands all of that time, hoping in vain for a Rose Bowl trip through an average of 4 wins per season. The Symphony Band however proved to b a bonanza of travel, touring the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Arabic countries for an entire simester at State Department expense. Concerts and recording sessions in Carnegie Hall and at the 1964 World's Fair. I've recently seen discs of those sessions of Sousa and College Marches in Borders. I met my eventual wife, currently of 42 years, at college. Susan was a 1959 graduate of Ann Arbor High and also a Music grad from UM. We raised a b...Expand for more
oy and a girl who each are now raising a boy and a girl, ages 2 through 13. After being a band director for Vassar Schools, near Saginaw, for three years in the 60's, we headed east to do some college teaching at Hoftstra Univ. on Long Island, U of M(aryland,) and U of M(aine.) After retiring in 2001, we continue to live in Orono, Maine, near Bangor. We do free lance music performing and teaching, while shoveling snow(19 inches the morning I write this) and battling the vegetation on our 9 acres around a house built partly in 1820. Our son, who works in law inforcement for the federal government, lives near West Palm Beach, FL, and our daughter moved to the exotic midwest this past summer to teach Art History at Hope College in Holland after spending several years in her husband's home town of Brattleboro, Vermont. She obtained a Doctorate from Brown University in 2005. We travel often to Florida and Michigan, where we have other relatives. We also entertain friends relatives in the summer in Maine, where we are about an hour from Acadia National Park. One DHS and two VHS alums have been here. I hope that all friends and students have had an enjoyable life since high school, and look forward to additional contacts as time marches along.
