Fred's Story
Life is a fun-filled quest for many things: love, friendship, honest, trust, hope.
Still looking for peace.
Still trying to find the time to get on to a trout stream for some good fly fishing! Strange things happen along the roads we take in life. I set out to be some sort of a biologist, which I did, getting my biology degree at Hartwick College, a MS zoology from SUNY College at Brockport and other non-degree graduate classes in environmental engineering (University of Rochester) forest zoology (SUNY ESF), and environmental geography (Syracuse University). I spent 8 years doing research in environmental health and toxicology. Then a dramatic change took place: I ended up getting a Master of Library Science degree at Syracuse University. That was 25 years ago and I have been working in environmental settings ever since: Center for Environmental Information (Rochester, NY),
University of Tennessee Knoxville & Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and now at the University at Buffalo,
where I am a tenured Sciences Librarian (biology, geology, ecology, and environment and mathematics are my subjects).
While at Hartwick College is pledged Alpha Delta Omega Fraternity and was its President from 1970-9172. I played lacrosse (goalie) and was a member of the wrestling team. Became a member of Beta Beta Beta Honor Society in Biology in 1972. Helped to found Hartwick's All-Greek Council with Peter Papas, Alpha Sigma Phi) in 1971).
My wife, Dottie (nee...Expand for more
Holderle), and I met at Hartwick on the very first day of Freshman Orientation, though we never began dating until the beginning of our senior year. We were married in August 1974 and have one daughter, Kaeti Elizabeth, who graduated from the University of Rochester (art history with a concentration in archeology and minors in Classics, Political Science and Arabic). Kaeti got a BS Degree in Earth Science and Secondary Science Education (cum laude) from the SUNY College at Brockport and a MS in Geology from Mississippi State University. She married long-time boy friend and fellow UoR alumnus, George Flevares in March 2013.
I had the GREAT honor in January 2007 to be trained by Al Gore and The Climate Project to show Mr. Gore's slide show that is the basis of his book and documentary film, "An Inconvenient Truth." I have given the presentation in three different states and am filling in presentation in 2008. I am now a Mentor for Mr. Gore's nonprofit group, The Climate Reality Project, since 2012 and have assisted in training over 2,300 people in 2012 and 2013. My most memorable climate change presentation: SRO LeConte Lodge, Yosemite National Park, best locations: Oranjestad, Aruba and Grosier, Guadeloupe; largest: 1,200 high school students Auburn, NY. My belief on this: It is happening, it is real, it has consequences, and we MUST fix it.
If there is anything I wish I could do, it is to tie flies better (!) and get to use them more often.
