Fred's Story

Life How do I even begin to sum up 50 years of my life without leaving out some of the most important moments? As it is well known I was a genius all throughout school and so therefore had no problems with academics and graduating with honors in the top 10% of the class. I was also recognized for my artistic abilities and have won numerous art awards. I was also very active in sports and loved to play games of all sorts. Following my high school graduation I went into the United States Army and became a Medical Specialist and was stationed at West Point, New York, the Military Academy, Ft. Sam Houston, TX and Ft. Dix, NJ. I became very successful in the medical field and was retired in 1981 following an honorable discharge with medical reasons. I then went into working as a recreation assistant for over 7 years. Today I am a Rutgers University, New Brunswick graduate with my B.S. in Exercise Science. I've managed to perservere over the past 13 years within the health and fitness careers. I have been a trainer and fitness instructor, a fitness model, in movies (Double Platinum) and television (Spin City)and I have been competing as a Natural Masters Bodybuilding Champion for the past 7 years. I have won Mr. New Jersey Master's Championship 5 times. I have also met a few celebrities as well (Richard Simmons, Faith Evans, Willie Tate (Muhammed Ali's sparing partner), Dr. John Gray (Men are From Mars...), Brandi, Dianna Ross, and Michael J. Fox. I am an ordained minister of 14 years and the founder of "SPIRFIT," The Spirit of Fitness Ministries. I have two degrees (A.S. and B.S.) and a Doctorate in Divinity. I have always considered myself a natural healer of extraordinary talent. I love to work with people and I gain the greatest amount of satisfaction from working with children (I have 11) as a scout volunteer and a coach. I've been married 3 times also and my first wife is now deceased. I am always available for training and guidance. Well it's about the close of another fleeting year. I'm now living in Mesa, Arizona. My estranged wife and I have reconciled our marriage of 8 years this past July, 2005. My new job here at L.A. Fitness couldn't be any better. Now I can do what I love to do with all of the passion in the world! If anyone is reading this I hope that they attended our 30th class reunion last year. "IT WAS DA BOMB!" Although only about 80-90 of us showed up it was still enough to get the party started right. We even talked about holding a 35th. Stay in touch?! Love ya'll. School Boy oh boy what I remember about school. My elementary school sweetheart was Patricia Kreuger, my junior high school sweetheart was Hildy Kultinuk, and my high school sweetheart was Kathleen Halbert. I only had one best friend and his name was Mark J. D'Alessio and our friendship lasted all throughout elementary and junior high school until he moved. The things I remember most in elementary school were all of the riots that we used to have with the whites against the blacks. I remember the day we won when Curtis Gatson punched Frank Narcises in the gut and Frank keeled over like a little old maid. I guess he wasn't so tough after all. Anyway, the thing that I remember the most about junior high school was Hildy Kultinuk my junior high school sweetheart. We used to have so much fun at the school dances because she was such a great dancer and I knew that she loved music then. I remember her showing me her scar on her forearm from an accident she had and how sorry I felt for her. But I still loved her just the same. In high school I have the most fondest memories because that is where I was given the chance to do the most that I wanted to do. I believe that I had the best teachers in Middlesex County and in the State of New Jersey for all that matters. I remember that all I wanted to do was to learn as much as I possibly could. It seemed as if it was so easy for me then. Honors at first and then High Honors. Wow! I remember us winning the state championship in football my senior year and me beating the state champ in wrestling (Greg Niscivacci) 4-0 in a home duel meet. I remember beating out Larry Simms in winning the Ladies Auxilliary of Laurence Harbor art award. I even remember kissing Kathleen Halbert on our graduation night at a graduation party! I will never forget that kiss as long as I live it was my first high school kiss ever. Thank you Kathy, my wife then couldn't kiss half as good as you. I think I should have married you instead! College From Rutgers in 1997 to Brookdale in 1999. Graduation from Brookdale in 2001 and back into Rutgers in 2001. Graduating from Rutgers University this semester! Thank you God. Class of 2004, thirty (30) years since high school. A lot has happened but I am so grateful that it is finally over pretty soon. I did graduate with honors from Brookdale with a 3.5 G.P.A. but I don't know what happened at Rutgers because I think that a lot of what goes on there is strictly for political reasons. And therefore, I refuse to give my interpretation of my experiences at Rutgers. I can only truthfully admit that everything that was ever mentioned in regards to discrimination is the absolute truth. And I am a witness to that in both racism, sexism, ageism, skepticism and stigmatism. Because I am black, a male, 40's, a minister and with a disability, I have been subjected to discrimination in one form or another or in combination from one person or another at one time or another. And if you don't believe me just request a copy of my high school and college transcripts from Brookdale Community College and Rutgers University, University College--New Brunswick, N.J. I believe the grades do speak for themselves! Workplace In 2001 following the disaster of September 11, my wife and I were fortunate enough to open up our "Home Fitness and Recreation Studio business SPIRFIT." We've managed to maintain a steady amount of improvements and consistancies with the business although it is listed with the IRS as a not-for-profit ministry. Our clientele is growing slowly but the rewards just keep coming as each client is satisfied with their results and meeting their own personal goals. This has been our greatest success! The business is still fairly new but we hope to keep it up and one day expand from our home into an outside building. From the time that I was retired in 1981 from the U.S. Army I worked within the health field at a couple of hospitals and nursing homes. I even worked for the Visiting Nurse Association for 6 years. Then in 1995 I dsecided that I would return to college and pursue my degree in the fitness profession. So aside from working in the fitness profession for the past 13 years I spent the past 7 of those working as a fitness model, a Pfofessional Masters Natural Bod...Expand for more
ybuilding Champion and an actor as a cast extra. I've taught seminars and lectures with the area churches and this past semester I instructed a fitness certification class at Rutger's University for A.C.E. (American Council on Exercise). New job at the Sarasota Family YMCA in Sarasota, FL. This job gave me the opportunity to work as a professional in the Health and Fitness fields. I instructed group fitness classes and trained clients for individual goals. However, this job did not last very long (about a year and a half) due to the fact that I was being discriminated against by my supervisors and I had to file a charge for discrimination with the EEOC. I'm now awaiting mediation on the matter. My new job here in Mesa, Arizona is giving me plenty of opportunities to meet and network with a diverse group of individuals. I find it to be the most rewarding so far of all the jobs that I have held in the Health and Fitness industry. Military In 1974 following my graduation from high school my first wife then asked me if I would be interested in joining the Army since it had already become voluntary and we were expecting our first child. I was working at the same time that I was in high school but found it troublesome to go right into college at that time. It was for those very same reasons that I did in fact join the United States Army in July of 1974. The recruiter wanted to send me directly into West Point as a cadet until he found out that I was already married and had a dependant on the way which at that time did not qualify one for cadet material, unfortunately. I was then given the option to undergo training within my profession of choice of which I chose the medical field. I was sent to Fort Sam Houston Texas to attend the Academy of Health Sciences to become a 91B, Medical Specialist. After my training I was then sent to West Point where I did work at the hospital. At first I was assigned to the ambulance section and worked as an EMT. After about a year I was transferred to the Emergency Room where I worked in admissions, diagnosis, treatment and prescriptions. I was there for another year and then transferred to the medical surgical ward where I practiced nursing for the remainder of my tour. In 1978 I was released under a medical condition with an honorable discharge and was placed on the temporary disability retirement list. In 1981 I was retired from the U.S. Army with full benefits and honors. It was possible for me to accomplish a lot of things while I was in the military that I would not have been able to do had I not joined in 1974. Over the course of time that I spent out of the service I was always seeking to improve my life in one way or another. First within my family and then within my community. I began to join social groups and to participate within various organizations while still trying to work within the medical field. I owe the U.S. Army for helping me to get my life together and for giving me the opportunity to "Be All That I Can Be." Today I am still able to do just that and I am very humble and very grateful for that. I know a lot of other G.I.'s that are less fortunate than myself but have been given the exact same opportunities and benefits that I have. The only difference between them and me is the determination to succeed. I have been able to take care of a lot of G.I.'s and to heal a lot of them only to see them go home and become rejected by their own people. Today it saddens me that even their own families do not want to have anything to do with them. These very same men that had their lives put on the line for the same people that went to bed every night and slept without ever having to worry about a thing only to come back home and be literally placed upon a strangers doorstep. This is the shame that I live with every day of my life that I seek to eliminate by exposing it to everyone. Where is our American pride? Ceratinly not with our military and for that we all have to suffer now with the acts of terrorism, discrimination, selfishness and greed. God Bless America and may America never forget it or God! February, 2008 and quite a bit of time has lapsed since my last entry. However, I will do my best to update this profile. Here goes! The past two years have been a living nightmare! My ex-wife or should I say my estranged wife came down with a case of breast cancer in July of 06. Soooooo, I voluntarily became her care giver, supporter and provider of all good and natural things. I was the father and the mother to our two school age children. I worked two jobs as the bread winner. I dressed her wounds and held her hand throughout every chemo and surgery and radiation treatment. In spite of it all I always kept my faith and never gave up. Now, I'm not asking for a blue ribbon or a marching parade of something but for anyone else that has walked a mile in these shoes I can honestly say, God Bless You!!!!!!!!! And for anyone who hasn't but always wondered what it is like please, don't wonder any more you don't really want to know. So, that has been the past almost two years. Now I am back in school again for my Masters in Medical Science (M.M.S.) so that I can get my Physicians Assistants License. Pray for me and wish me well with this one because this going to be my last endeavor! I promise. Our two children Christopher, 16 and Brianna 10 are in honors classes at their schools and Christopher is taking up acting classes too. He is also driving now because here in AZ you can have a students drivers license. He has also received congressional letters of acceptance into each of the three military academy's. Wow, what a kid! I'm so proud of him but I don't think he knows how much. Hope you find this entry as interesting as the others. But, just keep on coming by every now and then and I'll keep you posted as to what's going on in my life. Until next time, take care, be well and God Bless! P.S. Still winning natural bodybuilding contests. Three last year as a grand masters champion here in AZ. That's over 50 if you don't already know who a grand master is. Well it has been about another 8 years since my last entry. I'm going to be sixty in February. I've done a lot in the past eight years. In 2010 I graduated from ASU with my masters in recreation therapy. In the same year I lost the love of my life my dear wife Vicki. Within the past year I've had three major surgeries. Oct 2014 I had back surgery then in April I had colon surgery and in May I had thyroid surgery this year. I now live with my current girlfriend Kelly and my daughter Brianna just moved out. I volunteer at the Phoenix VA hospital in recreation therapy. I want to compete in the ultra masters bodybuilding competition next year after I turn 60. Kelly is half my age and we want to start a family togrther soon.
