Fred's Story

May you live in interesting times, often referred to as the Chinese curse, is reputed to be the English translation of an ancient Chinese proverb and curse,’¦’™ Wikipedia. Proverb or curse? Good times or bad? I would have to say Good times and definitely not a curse. Another proverb: To the Carpenter, Everything Looks Like A Nail. I am an electronic engineer so I see the world through electronics. In my lifetime I have seen the birth of television, the transistor, the integrated circuit, electronic calculator, microprocessor, digital computer, the Internet, the World Wide Web, e-mail, cell phone, and GPS. At a time when most of our generation is learning computers from our grandchildren I taught computers to your grandchildren. I have also visited the Mecca of the transistor, Bell Labs; and the Mecca of Software, Redmond Washington. I have sent my designs high in the air and into deep into space and deep under the oceans. I have also seen weapons so accurate that death a thousand miles away is assured by the push of a button. I think we indeed have been blessed to have lived in these interesting times. I wonder if it will be the same for my grandchildren. Some things frighten me. Some years ago the California Secretary of Ed...Expand for more
ucation tried to enlist my aid in lobbying the legislature to place calculators in the second grade classrooms. I also saw college students using a calculator to multiply by ten and then getting the wrong answer. How can these students learn to think if they are taught to rely on little boxes for the right answer? Will they be lost when their GPS fails or will they remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west? As I look at the national ranking of student test scores I am thankful for Mississippi. Without Mississippi, California would be dead last in some categories. I am saddened to think that our grandchildren are not getting the quality of education we enjoyed at BHS. Say it aint so. I’d love to be proved wrong. I hope everyone will take an interest in their local schools. Take a look at the textbooks while you are at it. Then adopt the Chicago way. Vote early and vote often. I am saddened that I will be able to attend the BHS Class of ‘61 reunion. I have other commitments that were made a year ago. I would enjoy corresponding with any of you at fptownsend (at sign) earthlink.net. Murphy (of Murphy‘s Law fame) is the patron saint of engineers. Dilbert is the patron cartoon of engineers. I leave you with Dilbert:
