Fred's Story
Life
Fred Byus, from El Paso, Texas, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering. He holds a Master of Engineering Management Degree from George Washington University. He is a graduate of the National Security Management Course at the Maxwell School, Syracuse University.
Through a 31 year career in the United States Navy, Fred served on the nuclear submarines USS Swordfish (SSN 579), USS New York City (SSN 696) and USS Plunger (SSN 595). He was Commanding Officer of USS Tautog (SSN 639) from May 1993 to November 1995. From March 2000 to April 2001, Fred was Commander, Submarine Squadron 7. He was Chief of Staff, U.S. 7th Fleet from September 2002 to August 2003. He relieved as Commander US Naval Forces Korea in September 2003. He was spot promoted to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) in September 2003 and permanently promoted in June 2004.

der Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) from September 2003 to September 2005. He served as the Oceanographer and Navigator of the Navy in Washington, DC from November 2005 to July 2007.
Fred retired from active service on September 1st, 2007. He worked for the Battelle Memorial Institute until April 2018, serving in various positions including as Vice President and General Manager of the Mission Defense Technologies Business unit. .He has been self-employed as owner of Future Force LLC since leaving Battelle. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor of the Catholic University of America teaching Cyber Security, Organizational Behavior, Management Control Systems and Ethics to Masters candidates in Engineering Management.
Fred is married to Kathryn Jean Nielsen Byus of Salt Lake City, Utah. Married for 43 years, since June 1980, they have four children, John (1982), Sara (1984), Fred, Jr. (1988) and Jane (1990). They have nine grandchildren, ages 8 to 20. They reside in Northwest Washington DC. They are happy owners of the Byus Family Farm in southeastern North Carolina, actively building the farm and restoring its natural charm and beauty.
