Fred's Story

Life In 75' my family moved to Westerville and I graduated from Westerville North High School in 1977. It was a brand new school so we were the first graduating class. I was fortunate enough to make some good friends there that I stay in touch with even today. That area has grown so much since I lived there. After graduation I went in to the Air Force. I was trained in electronics and stationed at Beale Air Force Base, about 15 miles north of Sacramento, California. Occasionally, I'd be sent to Asia and Europe for a few months at a time. I really enjoyed my time in other countries and did as much sight seeing as I could. The job I had in the AF was great but I did not want to make it a career. So I did my four years and got out. I started working for a company in Silicon Valley(Palo Alto), called Coherent Inc. They make all types of laser systems and accessories for all types of applications. I started as a technician and went to school at night to get my degree. By 1994 I was working as an engineer and volunteered to go to Japan to help start their direct office in Tokyo. I had already been working with our Japanese partners and had made a few visits there so I had an idea of what I was getting in to. My wife Ann, quit her job as a manager at a small Bay Area software company and put all of her efforts in to being a "Japanese housewife". We enjoyed it so much that we ended up staying there for four years. Our first two girls were born there. While there, we traveled all around Europe and Asia. It is...Expand for more
great to have friends from there that we stay in touch with and even a few that visit us occasionally. We came back in 1998 and bought a house in San Jose. By then, I was the Service Mgr. for the Asia/Pacific Rim so I still did a lot of traveling. In 2000, my road warrior days ended when I was asked to take over their depot repair center. This was a great opportunity to manage a department with 20 techs and be responsible for $15M/yr revenue. A year later we needed more space so I moved the department 150 miles north to their facility in Auburn, CA. 18 months later the business was going through financial hardship and since my department was still successful they wanted to move it back to the headquarters in Santa Clara. By this time I had been with the company for twenty years and my wife and I decided that the life style we had in Auburn was much better to raise a family than down in the crowded and expensive Silicon Valley. I left them in 2003. Now I am the Tech Center Manager at TASQ Technology in Roseville, a division of First Data Corp. They are the leading Point of Sale outsource provider for the payment processing industry. Currently, I manage a group of over 100 staff that repair and process the devices for credit, ATM/debit, check, Internet and smart card technology. I really enjoy it and hope to be with them a long time.
