Stephanie's Story

Life After I graduated from West, I came to Athens to attend Ohio U. and I've been here ever since. I completed my master's degree in English, got my first teaching job teaching junior high English, married my first husband, divorced, and then spent two "interesting" years on my own learning who I really was! I married my current husband (assistant news director at O.U.), with whom I have one child, a dynamic and talented daughter who is working on her master's degree in biology at William and Mary College. I currently teach advanced placement literature at Athens High School; I live in a very old Federal brick house built in 1833 (supposedly a stop on the Underground Railroad). My husband and I love to travel (our last major trips were to Italy, where I left my heart, and the Caribbean); however, we love little jaunts close to home, recently spending a great week in Indiana at the Belterra casino/resort. We left in the black! I suspect that retirement is around the corner for me, but I hope to pursue a new career, perhaps in computer digital artwork. We shall see. Just for the record--I think that growing older has been an exciting process. So far, I've enjoyed every stage. School High school seems very dim and far away to me. I loved books then and I love books now. I was always busy and interested in the life of my school. I believe I received an extremely solid education in my years at West. al news stations, or when my brother (the current principal) describes the achievements of West students. College I loved college, attending Ohio U. during some VERY exciting years. I have two degrees from Ohio University, both in literature; however, I also received my teaching certification and have been a language arts teacher for twenty-eight years now. I always intended to earn a Ph.D., but I looked up one day and realized that I had been so busy teaching for so long, that I was perhaps a little "old" to begin a Ph.D. program. I also had come to realize that I wanted to try new things and didn't really want to continue the English-education game once I retired from teaching. Workplace I have never regretted being a teacher--it has always been rewarding and stimulating. I still love literature, students, and the teaching process; however, I have become somewhat disillusioned of late with the design of the public school system. School often feels like a treadmill running at its highest speed. No student nor teacher can work at peak potential in such a system. Nonetheless, my twenty years in Alexander County Schools and my recent eight in Athens City, have been challenging and illuminating. As a teacher, I have learned as much as I have ever taught, and this fact has filled my life with one self-discovery after another. I look forward to retirement, not because I am through with the world of work, but rather because I hope to explore new areas of that world.
