Frederick L.'s Story

Life My Spouse We met at Garfield's on Thanksgiving Break from College in '87 (Married for 19 together for 20) Me: Wabash Her: IU She's an Asst Superintendant for another school system in NW Indiana, & working on her PhD (Purdue). It's cool that we're both in education. My Pets A Rat Terrier named Darwin (Thornberry). Darwin was named because of my kid's favorite cartoon at the time (The Wild Thornberrys). Two cats (for my two sparring Daughters) Smoky (a male Russian Blue who looks just Church in Pet Sematery), and Isis (a spoiled, female Tortise Shell) My Kids We have 3 birth children, all girls: Krystal-19 Kandace-17 Kayla-13 And two adopted children: Angela-21 Ronald-18 My Job I am the pastor of a 400 member church in Gary, IN( which to some is unbelievable...). My denimination has moved us around the state some, which has been traumatic and beneficial. I met one of my best friends (Jeff) while I pastored in Marion, IN. He became my doctor and my prayer partner. I never experienced anything like that before. A doctor who you can trust. He always had my best interests in mind. I absolutely trust him with my life. Being in Marion also allowed me to form a relationship with the Indianapolis Colts, my absolute favorite football team. I know the team Chaplain and some of the players. They used to come and speak to kids in the community, and invite us to their big Christmas "shindig". We would load up my van with kids who weren't gonna get much for Christmas, and they would just shower them with stuff. That was awesome! The experience made me a llifelong Colts fan. I also teach Middle School (Merrillville Community School Corp.) For those who knew me in school: Imagine that!!!!!!!!!! And I coach 8th grade football (defensice coord. and d-line). I also run a mentoring program for boys which has just been "off the chain". We just took over the responsibility of managing the recycling for our building (1200 kids). I absolutely looove what I do, and the kids breathe life into me. I'm now also a union rep, which has been enlightening. I see another side of education now... College Wabash was and is a great school. I paid a lot ($ and sweat) to go there, but it was worth it. Many of the friends that I have now were people that I met at Wabash. The first teaching job that I...Expand for more
got in Northwest Indiana was because of the recommendation of one of the friends that I met at Wabash and it was at a very prestigious high school. One of my best friends, Benji, is from Wabash. When my mother died during my junior year, he rallied together all of our friends and they drove 2.5 hours to (Ft Wayne) to be at my mom's funeral. Then, 8 months later, they came back to attend my wedding. I have the utmost esteem for Wabash Men. Not all good men are Wabash Men, but All Wabash Men are Good Men!!! As for Grad School, that is an ongoing process. I have an M.Div from a school In INDY where I had a phenomenal experience with two profs who were well versed in Greek, Hebrew, and Biblical History. One of them was involved with the Dead Sea Scrolls project, which augmented our learning so much!!!! Now I am working on becoming a Reading Specialist and then going straight into my doctoral work. There is some pressure for me to get my Admin. License, but I don't know if I want to leave the classroom yet and be a Principal. I keep vassilating on which way to go though (Church-D.Min or School-Ed.D.). I do know that my work on mentoring boys will play a major role in what I discuss in my dissertation... Military The Marine Corps did a lot for me. "Butch" (Ray Barnett), my best friend at the time, had a lot to do with me enlisting. It was cool going through Boot Camp with him. He helped me a lot. He's still in and is a Major or Lt. Colonel now. He trains helicopter pilots, and lives out in Tustin, CA (where Will Smith was stationed in Independence Day). It was also kind of cool having a platoon (100+) guys who were mostly from Indiana, with a few from Illinois. I matured, gained a tremendous amount of confidence, and learned to be more assertive while I was enlisted. I got to see a lot of countries that I would not have been able to see otherwise. If it's in the West Pacific, you name it, and I've been there... Because of my millitary experience, I learned about management, organization, politics, and life. I commanded troops before I was of legal drinking age. That's was a major responsibility for a 19 or 20 yr old kid... I agree with Amherst grad Ezra Bowen (former columnist for TIME, I think): I think that everyone should spend some time in the military before starting a career!!!
