Fredericka's Story
The value of School
I was ill all the way through Elementary school. A Doctor in a little town called Whitesboro, gave me a typhoid vaccination so that I could start to school. He failed to sterilize the instruments resulting in an infection. the medications available at the time had no effect on the infection. It continued, nearly killing me at times, but not quite. The main thing was the drainages from the injection site and my orifices. Anyway, the school made Mother keep me home when they were bad. Needless to say I missed a lot of much desired learning. It caught up to me by the Sophomore year. Even though the drugs had been invented to cure my illness in 1950,I just couldn't grasp the studies. It was decided to be best for all if I just quit School. So that is what happened. This left a hole in my self confidence that only education could replace. Another story will tell how I decided to begin to build that that was never there..
I asked Mother if we were poor. Mother said,ÿ No Freddie, we don't have a red cent, but I donÿt think we're poor. I told my friend the next day,ÿ Momma said we didn't have any red pennies , but we aren't poor
After planting my little garden one summer, I put signs at the end of each row to identify what was planted there. The last row was UNIONS. Momma LAUGHED ABOUT the way I spelled onion, so I tore up the whole garden. I try so hard always, but I still can't spell.
One afternoon at school, a lady came up to me and introduced herself as a reporter for the Newspaper. She said she was told that I came to school nearly every day with a different hair color. Can you tell me why? She asked? I just told her that I get bored with myself and I need attention. We went together up stairs to the ...Expand for more
art department where she found a color wheel. She photographed me beside the color wheel, and did as she had said, she put it in the Ft. Worth Press in a day or two.
Yes I did have a Hero, I had a very worthy hero. It was and still is my Maternal Grandmother. She lives in everything I think , everything I do. I ask myself, "What would Grandma do?" She was the kindest, most generous person I ever met. I know she will be standing next to God when I join them up there.
I promised to finish my original story and tell you how I learned to write this letter. I began my marriage with two beautiful stepsons. they were 2 and 4 at the time. Everyone knows that all 2 and 4 year olds need to be read to. The 4 yr old, Mike, had memorized all of his little books , so when I would miss or stammer over a word, he would correct me. I've been avoiding reading anything out loud at all. I was masterful at getting out of those things. This time though was my time to learn to read better. I continued with this reading, The time came when I was asked to teach a children's Sunday school class. Now this time I really had to study. Reading comprehension had to be greatly improved or I'm not going to be able to do this. After a year of teaching the kids and I was amazed at how much I had learned. After the other two kids were born and we got them up in school, I decided I would like to go for my GED.I went to TCU to take the test. I made a pretty bad score, but I did pass. Then I was able to go to TCJC to pick up some studies. I took English comp.1, typing, had to drop out of short hand. just couldn't grasp it. I decided to spend some of my college time with Art studies. There is no end to this story, I love to study anything and learn all I have time for.
