Gail's Story
I graduated from Stanford with a major in sociology. In 1967 I moved to New York City to attend social work school but dropped out after one year when I realized it was the wrong choice for me. After 5 years with a literary nonprofit organization, I worked for 20 years+ in government and social service jobs, with many years as an appointee of Mayor Koch. My two favorite NYC jobs were as head of the family services agency (foster care and child abuse) and as head of a youth community service organization that was a model for AmeriCorps. 90, first working in a K-12 community service project sponsored by Kraft General Foods and the Beach Boys, and then moved back to the Bay Area. In 1993 I became the founding Executive Director and President of the Asian Pacific Fund, a community foundation in San Francisco whose mission is to get more Asian Americans involved in making charitable contributions. I retired from the Fund in 2012 having helped establish an endowment fund. I live in Oakland with my two cats, Lucas and Leia, and love retirement for the time it gives me to learn, relax and be more organized.
