Gail's Story
I believe that life offers many of us opportunities in the oddest of times. The challenge is to keep an open mind when these events occur because they can be life altering.
For myself, one of the first opportunities came when I was directing a show (I was a free-lance professional director at the time) and a gentleman approached me after a performance one evening. He asked me if I might consider applying for a job with a school that was launching a Creative and Performing Arts Magnet program. I was hesitant at first, but decided to go ahead. The second time opportunity knocked was about 18 years ago, when a friend told me about auditions that were being held to study under New York's Tony Award winner, Uta Hagen. I thought, okay, I can try it. Well, she accepted me and I w...Expand for more
as able to study with her for 5 years. It was the best theatrical education of my life. Not only that, but she befriended me into her close circle, where I experienced wonderful times, and I still cherish those memories ever since she passed away.
The third time, about 6 years ago, a parent of one of my students was into filmmaking. He offered to teach me and I took him up on it. I loved it, started to make movies, and now am not only writing and directing full-length feature films, but I teach two filmmaking classes in my program.
I have many more instances in my life where someone knocked on the door, out of nowhere, and a choice that was made meant a whole difference in my life.
If these opportunities had not surfaced, or if I had turned my back on a "gift horse", I would be in a different place. I like where I am. It feels good. And it is only because chance intervened, and I took the chance.
