Gail's Story

I have now taught in public education over 30 years, but I have also taught on the college level and at a drug rehab center. In addition to my teaching experience, I worked in industry. My last postion was as in investor relations. My husband and I have been married almost 35 years, and we have two married daughters. One has two children and the other had a dog. We all love being together.Thankfully, we have all been safe during this 2020 pandemic. My heart breaks for the racism and “me” culture in our country. d saddened me. He said, in my country a Black man has a 1 percent chance of being successful. Here we have a 10 percent chance. He is fully aware and impacted by racism and loves every bit of his widened 20 percent chance of success. Having taught a good portion of my educational career in urban schools, I can tell you stories of racism, including being required to get my cheerleaders on a bus during the fourth quarter of a football game... as we were leaving our bus was being stoned because we didn’t look like the town we played in. Have a conversation and try to understand the depth of hurt of being black in the US. It should not hurt and be scary to be alive wondering who will call you the n word or will stop you from doing something just because of your color...
