Gailmary's Story
Hello. I am, Gailmary T. Harper (Kaminski). I went into the USAF from Dayton, OH, in October 1969. A good friend of mine from Dayton, Sandra Bayham, had signed up with me. We were to have gone in together on 10 Oct 69. However, due to a medical emergency, I was delayed entrance until the 16th. So, we were
a week behind one another in bootcamp at Lackland AFB, Tx.
I was assigned to Brooks AFB, Tx from Dec 69 through Mar 71. My duty MOS was administration and I had the pleasure of working in the Military Personnel Office and Housing & Transportation. I had the fortunate experience to have Ms Rachel Shaw as my First Sergeant. I met so many nice people on base, and I can't say how much I enjoyed learning about the cities and people off base.
I met my exhusband at Brooks after he came back from Viet Nam. We had a
daughter and was later divorced in 74. (Robert D. Harper). We both live near the Los Angeles, CA areas.
I am currently living in a small high desert town just outside of Edwards AFB, CA.
I am involved with the Civil Air Patrol Squadron, and employed with the base
school district as an Instructional Aide. I enjoy volunteering with the schools and spending time with the children. My grandson, Shane, enjoyed the CDC and Bailey and Branch elementary schools on base. We have such fabulous teachers. It's a family setting, and easy to make friends on base.
I am a single grandparent, and enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My ...Expand for more
family now lives in Texas, and so sadly, I don't get to spend much time with them as I would like to. Especially with my grandson, golfing or building train tracks, and baking in the kitchen. As Shane would say, he is the 'baker' and I am the 'cooker.'
I love to golf, go bowling and watch movies. I am very crafty, both in sewing and baking homemade goodies. I love the San Diego Chargers, and Padre sports teams. Very fond of the Denver Broncos and Rockies, too. OUCH. I love going up to the mountains to get away from the desert. I used to ride a Harley, but gave it up in the late 70's. If I had another bike it would be a trike all dressed out.
I am a two time cancer survivor, thyroid cancer in 97, and then this year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. I am now on daily chemotherapy hormone treatments. I am working on getting my energy back, but the cancer wears out your whole body. Anyone who has had cancer and the treatments know that it takes along time to get stronger. You get tired of being tired. But, I am a survivor and will continue the fight. My dear friend, Glenda was with me through everything. I thank GOD for her. There are true living Angels in the world.
My prayer for the new year is to be healthy, and have a loving relationship with my family. To have GOD's continuing grace, forgiveness and new blessings.
God bless you all. Have a wonderful 2011 NEW YEAR.
