William's Story

After transferring from U of P and engineering, I graduated from Lycoming College as an English major and taught English for 23 years before moving into administration. I have been married for 30 years to another teacher (who is 2012's PA Art Teacher of the Year), and we live in Carlisle, PA where we raised one daughter who graduated from college with a Phi Beta Kappa key, is married and working as a college admission counselor. I retired in 2004 and keep myself busy as a track and swimming official, working both high school and collegiate meets. I also am active in our church and do some other volunteer work with the homeless and at Harrisburg's Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. In all that other time between college and now, I spent one summer traveling in Europe and the next one driving 13,000 miles across the county and back. I picked up a pilot's license in 1979 and used to fly my own Cessna until our daughter was born. I received a Master's from Bloomsburg U and later a Ph.D. from Penn State. My wife and I like to travel a lot and spent another...Expand for more
month in Europe for our 25th anniversary. When I moved into administration, I was hired as the assistant principal by Dick Dietrich (the former Springfield math teacher and soccer coach) and worked with him for two years until he retired. During his retirement party, I got out my senior yearbook and had to explain to him that the "DSDT" that many of the members of his team listed as an organization stood for "Dietrich's Soccer Drinking Team." He had no idea. I used to enjoy watching Elaine Garzarelli on Wall Street Week and seeing our former newspaper editor (Art Durbano) write movie reviews in TV Guide after Judith Christ left that job. While I was teaching I used to brag about how demanding my high school was and the colleges that my classmates went to. Even though I went to Springfield for only two years after my parents moved to the township, I felt that it was extremely formative. I credit SHS for my small claim to fame when I won a few dollars on Jeopardy back in the 90s. It was challenging and memorable. I regret not staying in touch with more people.
