Garry's Story

When it comes to life's big events, it seems like I'm about a decade behind many of you. I got married, the first time, at about the time some of you were dropping your kids off at school. And the second time, way later than that. A few of you have grandkids older than my daughter, Shannon (25). My son, Casey and daughter-in-law, Courtney have two little ones - my grand daughters - age 1 and 4. If we have a prize at one of our upcoming reunions for the youngest grand child, I should be in the running. After college in San Francisco, I spent a few years at Disney and then moved on to grad school at USC in LA. A PhD is largely the union card for higher education leading to faculty gigs at the Univ of Washington's Grad School of Public Policy, Harvard Business School, INCAE, Harvard's Latin America Institute then based in Nicaragua, USC's Grad School of Applied Behavioral Science and more recently, Fielding Grad School where I was among the founding faculty for the Media Psychology PhD program. INCAE, based in Managua, was the most exciting. It was during the revolution overthrowing Somoza and you never knew when some machine gun toting 14 year old might open up lighting up everything in sigh...Expand for more
t. The years in academia were broken up about three decades starting or running digital and multimedia companies. A couple were quite successful and a couple others, complete failures. My son once asked, "why didn't you just do the successful ones?" Duh. I lived in Central America for a couple years, Mexico for a while and still visit often, lived in London with a small apartment in Eindhoven while in Europe and "commuted" to Iceland for about two years. I guess I've set foot in several dozen countries but seen very little. Business travel is airports and conference rooms, it doesn't matter much where they are. But I do have favorite places; Paris, Amsterdam, Singapore, Venice, Barcelona, Nice and particularly Lisbon - I'd move to Portugal tomorrow if I could. I "retired" last Fall. We renovated a little place in Sonoma and got settled just in time to be locked down due to Covid. I am now in the process of "un-retiring", continuing involvement with the DOD's CentCOM where I've worked on media and terrorism for some time. It is safe to say that I've never had a career, I've just done stuff - some more interesting than others. I hope that all of you are well, safe and semi-sane. 2020
