Gary's Story

After graduating from KUHS I went to the U of O for a year and then transferred to the University of Hawaii. I finished up college there and taught young kids for several years and also started a woodworking business. Eventually the business took all of my time and I stopped working in schools. My wife, Pat, is from Hawaii, and when we married we combined our last names: Cunningham-Lee (fortunately, hers was short). After we were married about a year we decided to make a big change and so we moved to Japan (she's fourth-generation Japanese-American, also Chinese and Hawaiian). We've now been in Japan over 28 years. Needless to say, we like it here (though we do miss being able to visit family and friends as often as we'd like). We live in Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo where I worked at an advertising and translation agency for a long time. Now I spend most of my time working on an open source software project, Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware and consulting for websites that use that software. I'm one of the project administrators, and my main focus as a developer is the "look and feel," as I make visual themes for it, work on the user interface, and so on. I also offer services as a contractor to people and organizations setting up websites. Being part of this software project has been a great way to keep my brain from getting rusty -- I don't need to work on regular puzzles because every day I have puzzles to solve as I work on the software. Also my fellow collaborators are from all over the world, so it's a real good experience communicating with people in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Israel, Czech Republic, Hungary, Fiji, and other places on a daily basis. We have a daughter, Lauren, who recently graduated from Sophia University in Tokyo and now works at a company that facilitates international...Expand for more
conferences, and a son, Drew, who is a first-year student at Waseda University in Tokyo. They have both been very involved in shorinji kempo, a martial art, and in fact earned their black belts quite a while back. They've taken part in the Chiba prefecture and Japan national competitions a number of times. This martial art is kind of unusual because it emphasizes proper form and good values and behavior over competition and beating the opponent. It's been great for the kids physically, socially and mentally, and we're really lucky to have been introduced to the dojo and the sensei, who is a truly special kind of person. My family's web site is cunningham-lee dot com. This is a case of the cobbler's children having no shoes, as I tend to work on the underlying software much more than the site content, which is pretty slim and now way out of date. I'll try to update it soon (which is a mantra I often repeat but rarely follow through on). I also have a web site related to the software project at zukakakina dot com. The software project website itself is tiki dot org. My username in that project is "chibaguy". I signed up with classmates.com when, if I recall correctly, everything was free. I believe strongly in information on the Internet being free, and so I have a philosophical objection to paying even a small fee for the gold plan here. Unfortunately that means I don't see messages from people here and so on, but I object to paying for something that's free everywhere else on the net. If anyone would like to contact me, the email address I check most is gary_c at cunningham-lee dot com. I hope all my old classmates are fine (I mean 'old' like 'from the old days'. I'm not saying we're really _old_ ;-) ). Over here, we -- knock on wood -- are basically healthy and happy and managing to keep things together.
