Gary's Story
Life
Gary was born and grew up in northern British Columbia. In the 1960s, his family moved to Toronto where he attended high school, in Scarborough, later receiving his engineering degree from the University of Toronto.
From 1984 until 2003, Gary worked for the Ontario Public Service, (OPS) when he left to start a systems consulting firm - eXtreme Ground  servicing community and labour groups, small businesses, and individuals.
While with the OPS, Gary became a well known voice within the union where he served in a number of executive roles, worked on committees, and handled grievances to defend the rights of his fellow members. It was in his local that the right was won for religious minorities to have paid leave for their holy days.
In the years from 1993 to 1999, Gary ran FaxLeft, a free fax distribution network connecting groups and individuals in the GTA to community, arts, immigration, social justice, faith group, education, environment , and labour information.

a long-time New Democrat who has served in several positions within the riding.

In the 2003 provincial election, GaryÂs dedication, Intelligence, and firsthand knowledge of the issues won him the nomination in Scarborough East. In that contest, Gary bucked the Liberal tide that swept the province, doubling the NDPÂs share of the vote in the previous election. His campaign effectively demonstrated that the New Democrats are a force in Scarborough East.
Earlier this year, Gary was chosen as the founding President of the new Pickering-Scarborough East NDP riding association. In April, however, when the riding association requested that he stand in the federal election, he stepped down from the presidency to become the candidate. Once again, he ran a very successful campaign, getting almost 4 times the votes that the NDP received in 2000.
Gary has now re-assumed the presidency of the riding association. He has also been chosen once again to represent the party in the upcoming federal election.
Gary is also the Director for Labour & Anti-war issues for the Muslim Canadian Congress.
