Gary's Story
Life
After graduating from Oroville High School in '79 I went on to Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications - Print Journalism. I interned as a photojournalist in Idaho then moved to Seattle and worked as freelance journalist and photographer for a few years. I came home to Oroville for a weekend and was offered a job at the Okanogan Valley Gazette-Tribune in '87. I soon became news editor and then Managing Editor. I was married in '94, separated in '00, divorced '03. The good news is I have two great step kids, Segornae, 20 and Morgan, 14. Segornae is in college in Spokane and Morgan goes to school in Wenatchee. My parents are Larry & Judy DeVon. They are both retired, Dad from owning/operating the Pastime Tavern for 35+ years and Mom from 30 years as an elementary school teacher at Oroville. I have two younger brothers - Dante & his wife Denise live w/their 2 kids, Derick (6) and Dylan (4), in Marysville, WA. & Michael & his wife Daniella, liv...Expand for more

My great-grandfather Geo. DeVon was born Gabrielo DeVona in southern Italy and immigrated to the U.S. before the turn of the last century, settling in Oroville in the late 1880s. He owned a hotel and Saloon there, as well as a ranch, which still is in operation after more than 100 years. He and his wife Sophia (Scarpelli) raised seven children in Oroville, including my grandfather Albert. My maternal great-grandparents were from Checkloslovakia, Germany/France. My maternal grandparents were Gottfried (Fritz) and Esther Connot. Fritz died while working on renovating the Ballard Bridge in 1940 and Esther raised my mom and uncle as a single parent working as a nurse in Ellensburg, WA. I live in a log house that I own on the Okanogan River near the Cherry Street Bridge on the edge of Oroville. I own a dog named Sophia. Hobbies include photography, hiking and restoring a basketcase 1971 Datsun 240Z Series I sportscar (built 12/70).
