Gary's Story
Biography
Gary K. Jones
Gary is a native of the Puget Sound region, and was born in Tacoma Washington. His grandparents were homesteaders in the San Juan Islands, and Gary spent much of his childhood exploring this unique marine environment. While working a variety of part time and student jobs, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Washington, majoring in psychology and natural sciences. In 1979, he accepted a commission as an officer in the U.S Air Force, and spent over 10 years working on telecommunications and computer systems projects around the world.
He completed 27 hours in MBA studies at St. Martinÿs University and is a certified Space Systems Controller. He continued working in information technology after leaving the air force in 1990, as a senior technology project manager at the Hanford Nuclear Site in south central Washington and later as a technology consultant with firms in the private sector. His clients included Lucent Technologies, Weyerhaeuser, The University of Phoenix and Airborne Express. He is an internationally board certified Project Management Professional with the Project Management Institute.
In the fall of 2000, Gary obtained licensure as a massage therapist with the Washington State Department of Health. For three years he worked and played on the Quinault River, operating a small massage retreat in the Colonel Bob Wilderness Region and performing massage and administrative management services at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, a naturopathic medical college. He is currently pursuing graduate study at The Evergreen State College in the Master of Environmental Studies program. His academic and scientific interests include mycological remediation of salmon spawning habitat and riparian zones, promoting ecological awareness through education and research, and integration of shamanic ways and practices in environmental studies and science. He serves as Treasurer, Board of Directors for the Puget Creek Restoration Society, a wilderness stewardship and non-profit entity in Tacoma, Washington.
Gary is a life long martial artist, a scholar of Walt Whitman, Tao, Zen Buddhism, linguistics and student of esoteric philosophies and belief systems. He enjoys long walks in the rain forests of the Pacific northwest, mushroom with Swiss cheeseburgers, and the color blue. He is an expert in the field identification of local shamanic fungal species and their allies.

In the near term, Gary plans to complete the MES program, relocate to southwest Alaska, and buy a small float plane. There he will build a sanctuary for long-haired dingoes and work environmental issues through education and consulting, and develop a small massage retreat, meditation center and mushroom farm, somewhere far from the ways of humans. He is also compiling a collection of personal poetry, or word pictures as he prefers to call them. It will be titled The Lighthouse Keeper, or The Opium Smoker, or A Boy and His Dog, or I Came From Outer Spaceÿyou decide, you will know it when you see it. Namasteÿ!
