Gary's Story

Life Grad Fitch 61 and joined US Army in July 61 to be an Army Bandsman (musician). Had played in school bands since 5th grade, so why not? Did Basic Training at Ft. Dix, NJ and from there went to The USN School of Music in Anacostia, Wash DC. There was no Army Music School at that time. There was lots of live music around the area. Jazz Greats (Miles-JJ- Coltrane etc) and Rock 'n Roll at The Peppermint Lounge. After six months of living with hundreds of musicians- most of them draftees out of College, I graduated and got assigned right back to Ft. Dix. It was fun there, but it was a huge Recruit Center and noplace for a dude like me- I needed to see more of the world than Trenton and Philly. I put in a request for foreign duty and instead of being sent to Korea or Vietnam, I was assigned to Coligny Caserne at Orleans, France. I arrived there Nov 62 and immediatly got into the routine playing parades, concerts, and dances all over North Central France. There were a few Military jobs here and there, but not too many. So many girls and so little time....... Speaking of girls, I had a special French one named Betty Moinard. We saw each other whenever we were both in town. Her Mom and Dad did not approve, but that didn'...Expand for more
t bother us. When I left in July 64 I said good-bye and promised to write. Returning to Mystic,I I worked at Sonoco Products making paper tubes for a while and took a Plant Clerk position when a guy went away for his NG active duty. In Nov 65, while working at EB in the UT inspection dept I got a call from CL&PCO in Mystic for an Engineering Clerical job I had applied for.I started working there and after a few courses at Thames Valley and a lot of schmooozing, I was made an Estimator working out of the Willimantic Office in 71. Betty came over here and we got married in Dec 67. Our son, Jan, was born in 1972. I bounced between Mystic, Willi and New London until I retired as a Chief Distribution Engineering Tech in April 04. We sold a big house in Mystic and bought a snug condo in Waterford. We are enjoying being retired with Wintertime somewhere else that's warm. That's my story and I'm stiicking to it. WHAT'S YOURS???? PS-- I entered my name on the Northampton High School list to try and locate Jerilyn Bradbury, who played sax in the NHS Band. We met at an exchange concert in 1960. My friend Vic Halligan is curious about what happened to another NHS Band member named "Jackie" Are you ladies out there somewhere?????
