Gary's Story
Life
Who would have thought that a roughneck Farmers Blvd kid would make a life for himself and his family by teaching High School Algebra, Biology, and Chemistry to students in Special Education? Not me, but here I am; teaching the same type of student that I was in high school; not special ed, but a knuckle head. A straight-up fearless teen looking for beefs so I could show my fighting skills to the world. I have been able to return to AJ High and teach the daughters and sons of my classmates; what a reward! eryday and end up getting kicked out or quitting during the school year. I am so glad that Andrew Jackson High School gave me all the pressures (Drugs,Guns,Women) both a teen and a young adult face when growing up. After high school, there wasn't anything that could get me off the path of being a productive Black Man (citizen). Remember, "You can because you KNOW you can" and " When one strives one attains success." (Dr. Evelyn Jones-Rich,AJ High Principal)
Workplace
I am now a Crisis Intervention Resource Teacher (CIRT) at Northwestern High School, in Hyattsville, MD. It is challenging when emotional and behavior problems prevent a student from learning; or, a teacher from teaching. My job can be very peaceful one moment then totally opposite the next. I am lucky that my H.S. experience was full of "DRAMA" because the students don't come close to being too difficult to deal with.
