Gary's Story

Life Hi all! Where to begin! After High School I worked as a logger for about a year. I then got a job at a fabrication plant in Albany, where I eventually learned to weld. A profession I pursued for 15 years. Eventually it was time for a change, and change I did. Through an interesting chain of events I learned American Sign Language and went back to school to become a Sign Language Interpreter. My first job after graduating was at a public high school in Vancouver, WA. I stayed in Vancouver working at that, and eventually another High School, until 1998. Previously I had married, raised two kids, and divorced. In Vancouver I met a woman that by 1998, had become my committed life partner. We moved to Columbus, Ohio so she could pursue her doctorate in Applied Behavior Analysis at The Ohio State University. While in Ohio I worked as a staff interpreter at that university. I had discovered my dream job! When she graduated in 2001 she found an assistant professor position at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville, which is where we lived for five years. I love Florida, nearly as much as Hawaii which is where my parents lived after retiring in '78. My Father died in 2002, and my mother has moved...Expand for more
back to Sweet Home. Florida is just about my dream place to live, you know those "palm trees and sandy beaches" from the "compare yourself with others" section. We were not to stay however. In 2006 my wife Lynn found another job in Knoxville, Tennessee. We moved up that summer. Now we live on 20 wooded acres about an hour north of Knoxville. We have a spring fed pond that supports fish, turtles, and the occasional water snake. The town we live near resembles Sweet Home in many ways. The culture, the values, the attitudes are all very familiar. The accent is different though. We have six small dogs that have the run of the place. Between Lynn and I we have 5 kids. Thankfully we are all close. We love, and are loved by, them all. It's great when the family can get together. It doesn't happen often enough. We also have 2 grandbabies that are really GRAND babies! All the kids are happy and getting on with their lives. We couldn't be prouder of them all. Who knows where the currents of life will lead us next. Maybe we'll stay here. One never knows. Life is an adventure and the fun is in the living of it. Write some time and let me know where you are and what you're doing. I'd love to know. Gary Rollins
