Gary's Story

Served in the Navy from 1964 to 1968 for a little cold war excitement. Traveled extensively, Turkey, Italy, Lebanon, Greece, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Spain, Brazil, Uraguay, Cuba, Bermuda and the rest of the Caribbean. Very interesting but very tiring as well when cramming 20 years worth of travel and adventure into 4 years. Wouldn't do it again but wouldn't trade it for anything either. Could never have finished college had I not served my time in the military and I did (very briefly) consider making it a career. Since I served my initial tour of duty on a destroyer I got my fill of the sea right away and since I new how many of those little devils the navy had, I figured the chances of drawing at least one or two more destroyers was very likely. Made a lot of good friends there that I'm still in touch with after all this time. No regrets. Still love to travel and visit friends in England every other year or so. Last trip was August 2007 to East Sussex and to Paris. First trip through the Chunnel. Spent an entire month just driving around the US in 1976 from the Grand Canyon to the Rockies to Bar Harbor Maine. Still vacation regularly in Bar Harbor. My wife, Barb Petit was born in Pasadena CA and graduated from Annandale HS in northern Virginia. She also graduated from William & Mary College in 1972 and Central Michigan U. in 1983. We are both avid gardeners and music lovers. We attended our first concert together in 1972 to see Jethro Tull at Scope in Norfolk although we wouldn't actually meet until 10 years later....Expand for more
(I vaguely remember seeing a cute little blond that looked a lot like Reese Witherspoon on the opposite side of scope in the cheap seats that I am sure was Barb.) Anyway, since then we have followed U2 from Philadelphia to San Diego and attended as many as 50 other music venues from R.E.M. to Carlos Santana and INXS. That is the reason that my favorite conversational phrase is "Huh?..wha'd you say?" My ears still ring constantly from all those concerts. (Or, maybe it was all those Colts home games at Veterans Stadium in Baltimore that did it.) Whatever, it sure is fun being married to your best friend and playmate. Barb and I attend the GHS reunion 2 years ago (?) at the Breezy Point O Club on NAS Norfolk. A small group of Ocean View people who have our own separate reunions converged there together. It was the first GHS reunion for some of us. Saw a lot of ppl that we hadn't seen in a long time (John Walsh and Geraldine Coston just to name a couple) and it was really great. We are looking forward to attending another one soon. I am retired now although I have been restoring old houses here in Petersburg Virginia where we have lived for the past 28 years. Petersburg has a wealth of historically significant properties that are available for restoration and salvage. We do not have a project in the works at the moment but we stay busy maintaining 1.66 acres of formal gardens and ponds at our home between fix-er-uppers. Anyway, thanks for reading this and showing an interest in my page. Hope to see you at an upcoming reunion sometime soon. Gary R
