Gary's Story
Life
Classmates, I had some time today so I thought I would bring friends up-to-date on what I have been doing for the past 42 years. That sure seems like a long time as I look back.
After graduation I started college at Ohio State University. I started summer quarter because some guy in my one of my classes mainly Dave Walter told me not to apply to early so I never applied until March of 1965. So I had to start in the summer as fall classes were filled. I and some other townies made the trip everyday to campus. We met in the student union often- Linda Finn, Karon Blanton, Bob Crocetti,Bob Gammel, Sandy Sanders, and a few others. The four years went quickly and before I knew it I graduated in June 1969.
As was the case at the time if you remember we were in a War called Vietman. I had one more quarter of Air Force ROTC to complete before I became a 2nd Lieutenant. I became interested in the Air Force as a result of knowing Colonel Sanders who I have respected all of my life. I was commissioned in December 1969 by Cheryl Hoovers father Brig Gen Paul Hoover another person for which I have great respect.
That same month I became engaged to Ann Hinterschied who I met at Ohio State. In February 1970 I entered active duty and was assigned to Reese AFB in Lubbock Texas. I must say pilot training was very diffcult with over half of the class not making it. Somehow I finished but academics was not my strong suit. I blame Tex for this because we always just wanted a C in the class. Well half way through the year of training Ann and I got married and she joined me in Texas where she attended Texas Tech.
After pilot training I went to advanced training in Alexandia La. After advanced training I left for Da Nang Vietnam in June of 1971. I served 13 months in Vietnam and flew over 125 combat missions. It was a sur real place but one of many memories.
Next, I was assigned as a KC-135 pilot at Loring AFB Me. Th...Expand for more
e KC-135 is essentially a Boeing 707 jet aircraft. Ann and I lived in Merced Ca while I went through 6 mos of transition training. Both of our children were born in Maine, Mark and Julie.
Believe it or not in 1976 I was assigned back to Columbus Ohio at Rickenbacker AFB. My primary duty was as an Instructor Pilot and I enjoyed being home again.
In 1979 I was assigned to Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton as a Program Manager. A Program Manager is someone that procures the weapons that the Air Force Buys. I worked on the Acquisition of the B1-B bomber. Next, I went for one year of school in Montgomery Al. Doesn't sound like me does it. Then back to Wright Patterson Flying special test aircraft. I was the mission commander flying out of Hawaii supporting the Space Suttle Launch in Jan 1986 when the Challanger crashed on Launch. After 2 years at Wright Pat I went to school again and was assigned to Eglin AFB in Fl. I worked on missle and the F-22 Advanced Fighter Procurments. Then I went to school again for 1 year at Air War College.
My final active duty assignment was in Boston Ma at Hanscom AFB. There I managed the $2.1 billion upgrade of our Nuclear Warning System in Colorado Springs. After that I managed a $5.6 billion Arms Sale to Saudi Arabia. I traveled almost 250 days per year for 3 years. I retired from active duty as a Coloned in June 1996.
Next with the kids both in college I took Ann to Saudi Arabia for 7 years. I could write a book about this part of our life. I worked with the Royal Family and Ann taught school for the Royal Family. We traveled everywhere and went on 2 around-the-world trips. Aman Jordan and London UK are favoriates. Also, got to sail down the Nile.
I now live in Ft Lauderdale Fl in a condo on the ocean but I want to move to Tampa and get a boat. Ann likes it here but I never stay one place very long. I e-mail Cheryl Hoover, Steve Heavlin and Tex. It's has been a fun ride.
