Gary's Story
After high school I went to NAU for 3 years off & on until I made the Dean¿s List; unfortunately it was the wrong list. I took a trip in 1971 up the AlCan highway to Alaska with a buddy for a month and a half while I tried to figure out what I was going to do with my life. Upon my return to Phoenix, I worked, partied and partied some more for a couple of years. I finally got my act together and went back to school and graduated from ASU in engineering in 1976. I worked in Upland, CA for 1 ½ years after graduation (which I hated) then I moved back to Phoenix. I reconnected with Talley after 8 years of off and on dating and we were married in 1978. Our first son was born in Phoenix in 1982. As I saw Phoenix turning into the megatropolis that I hated in southern California, we both quit our jobs and moved to Prescott in 1985. Our second son was born in Prescott in 1987. After 4 years of self-unemployment, I was rescued by a call offering me my current job in southern Oregon. As Talley states, this is where God will be building his retirement home. We have been here for 20 years and have no intention of ever leaving. I love the outdoors and there is more hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, fishing, mounta...Expand for more
in biking, cross country skiing, rafting and kayaking in this area than I will ever have time to experience; but I¿m giving it a shot. Our oldest son, Seth, is living in Anchorage, Alaska which gives us an excuse to travel there. He survived 2 tours with the Marines in Iraq and the relief of not having to watch for Marines coming down our drive during his tours can¿t be overstated. He¿s currently single, living with his girlfriend. Our youngest son, Tate, is going to Oregon State majoring in Horticulture. We can only hope he chooses to grow plants that are legal. He has been dating a real sweetheart for 1 ½ years and we hope that relationship turns permanent.
Overall, my life has been wonderful since high school; sometimes challenging, but wonderful. The Lord has blessed me with a great wife, children and an incredible place to live. It just can¿t get a whole lot better than that. I am looking forward to re-connecting with friends from high school at the reunion. Unfortunately I spent most of my free time in high school hunting, fishing or under the hood of my truck; so I didn¿t make a lot of friends. It will still be great to touch base with those friends that I had and possibly make some new ones.
