Gary's Story
I was probably best known at Stuart for having been a football player (which is certainly true as the Associated Press voted me 1st team All State) but that omits my membership in the choir, in 3 honor societies, and as freshman class treasurer. I went to the Naval Academy where I badly hurt my shoulder playing 150 lb football, so I concentrated on being a lacrosse goalie and singing in the Catholic Choir. However, I was not an engineer, so while always having done well at math, applying it to engineering was my come uppance.
I taught sailing after graduation to new plebes and then went to Navy flight school. I was about half-way to my Wings of Gold when God take a hand and I suffered a major auto accident that cost me my leg and my career. I returned to McLean to live with my folks until I could walk again, then moved in with classmate Ron Brown in a party apartment. olitics in the City of Falls Church. I ended my lobbying career as a Deputy Asst. Sec. of Energy for Congressional Affairs under Bush 41, while simultaneously serving as the Vice Mayor of Falls Church culminating a 12-year stint on the city council. Meanwhile I had gotten a masters at AU, married a grad school classmate and had two wonderful daughters. They're now both married, have kids, and live in DC.
I got remarried in 2000 and moved down to Southern Maryland to be closer to my sailboat and within a year was appointed to the state Veterans Commission by Governor O'Malley and subsequently to the Veterans Home Commission that runs a 400-bed state owned veterans home on which I'm the Vice Chairman and Secretary. I'm also on the board of the largest homeless shelter in Southern Maryland, as well as my yacht club. I taught math at the local community college and have been an SAT tutor for 16 years. I've written four books, two of which have been published and still play golf weekly. My wife and I have two new 4-month old kittens -- Midnight and Socks.
