Gary's Story

Life University of Houston, 1967-68; City Colleges of New York, Regents Program, Associates Degree 1981; U.S. Navy 1968-1993 (Retired, Chief Petty Officer); married Cynthia Marie Batts, 1970, divorced 1974; married Terry Lee Perna, 1976, divorced 1979; married Irene (Anne)Elizabeth Fields, 1980, still married. One son, Gery Glenn Manthos, by Cynthia Marie, born January 26, 1973 - he is currently a financial manager for a hotel chain and lives in Florida. I am President and sole director of Compu-Zoo of Virginia Beach, Inc., a retail computer store specializing in custom computers; am also managing partner in Level Up Enterprises LLC, a LAN center specializing in computer gaming. I am a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club (I own a 1964 Studebaker Avanti), the NRA (I am a Life Member and Pistol Shooter), Virginia Shooting Sports Association (Life member), the VCDL (Virginia Citizens Defense League) and the Fleet Reserve (retired Navy, Marine Corp and Coast Guard personnel). I would love to hear from other alumni. Update: I sold Level Up gaming center in August 2008, closed my retail computer store and now do on-site sales and service working from my home. In 2010, during a particuarly slow time in the computer business I worked for the U.S. Commerce Dept. as a Census Worker. This year I am semi-retired, working the occasional computer repair job. This is also the year I can start drawing Social Security, and I will as soon as I am eligible. Get it while you can! UPDATE 2016: Have fully retired at the end of 2015. Am keeping busy with my advocacy with the VCDL, shooting pistols, a little traveling, DIY, and other things. School High School was a chore, mainly due to all the cliques. If you weren't part of the "in" crowd, you were nobody and were treated that way by many of your classmates. I was a skinny kid and was a target of the bullies in my gym classes. I'd like to see them try something today! I did enjoy myself socially because of all the girls I dated and the few close male friends I had. I'll admit I didn't have the maturity level I should have had to do well in school. I did what I had to do to get by. I only had one teacher I liked a lot - Mr. Holland in my Electricity class. There was one other - a summer school American History teacher whose name I don't remember. He knew how to teach and inspire! I know we had some incompetent teachers in our school - a French teacher comes to mind. The worst teacher was an old hag who taught World History and Economics. She always put me to sleep. I fondly recall Carrie, Norma, Debbie, Gayla, and many more girls I dated from Waltrip. There were many more from other schools, usually met while I was a lifeguard at city pools during the summer three years running. One of them became my first wife. Now THOSE were fun times! College Surfed my way through a year at the U. of H.; tested out much of my associates degree while in the Navy; enjoyed a few classes here and there (at sea and ashore), taking everything from Real Estate to Criminal Law; wish I had the time to complete my 4 year degree. If I could, I would get a degree in Computer Science or Information Te...Expand for more
chnology, or possibly Network Engineering. Workplace Life is a ride and mine has been quite a ride! I've worked on F-4 and F-14 fighters and floated in most of the world's oceans; I've supported the electronics packages out of all the sea going aircraft the Navy has; I have had the responsibility for $300 million worth of equipment aboard two different aircraft carriers; worked in Quality Assurance and Safety in the Navy; did a tour as an instructor, teaching computerized automatic test equipment; ran a 'bus company' 24/7 for one of my ships while it was in overhaul; I've nurtured young sailors, guiding their lives and careers; and on my last tour in the Navy, I helped put together the USS George Washington CVN73 (I am a "Plankowner"). Since retiring from the Navy, I have worked as a mechanic on collector and special interest cars; installed network wiring as a subcontractor; sold accounting software around the world; built computers, ran an RMA department for a computer builder, and sold computers for someone else; opened my own computer store; and now run my computer store and my LAN Center (computer gaming center) six days a week. Who has time for other things? Actually, I want to sell it all and retire (a second time) for good in a few years. Update: still run my own computer business, but it is operated out of the home as of Aug. 2008.. The LAN Center was sold in Aug. 2008. Things have wound down and I am semi-retired today. I work on an occasional computer repair job and support long term clients. Update 2016: I am fully retired now. Staying busy with a lot of projects. Update: I am now fully retired. Did not renew my business license for 2016. That takes care of my work career. However, I am involved in a lot of other activities, such as the Virginia Citizens Defense League. I lobby in Richmond, VA each year on Lobby Day. I am very active in Pro-Gun activities. I am also very interested in muscle cars. I currently own a 1964 Studebaker Avanti R-1 4-speed, a 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT-8, plus a Mini Cooper Clubman S 6-speed. Military I am a Vietnam Era Veteran, which means I was in the military during Vietnam, but never served in-country (not by choice - I actually volunteered to serve in the combat zone but the Navy turned me down). My first deployment in the Navy was ten months long because of Vietnam. With a 5 month turn-around, I did a 6 month deployment right behind it. This cost me my first marriage. I got married again during my shore tour, then went back to sea on the USS America, and she (the wife) was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (she was Navy too). After a two year separation with only a visit here and there, we decided to divorce. I am still friends with my first two wives. My current wife and I got married while I was on sea duty (I was A First Class Petty Officer aboard the USS America at the time) and we have been together 30+ years. She knew how to take care of herself during my deployments and that made all the difference. She was proud to be a Chief's Wife (I was promoted right after leaving the USS America)! I retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the Navy in 1993 after 25 years.
