Gary's Story

Life My life bio is pretty simple. I was there then, I'm here now, and I should be around for a while yet. What life has taught me: Be available to those who need you. Give as often and as much as you can, with no thought of return. What you stand for is more important than just standing out. Don't compromise your principles. Be tolerant and non-judgmental. Don't place unstated expectations on others. Don't interfere in other people's lives, not even your children's (especially not your children's!). Unconditional love is its own reward. Treat all people with respect (especially in mundane affairs like traffic, the store or the mall). You can eat most anything and sleep most anywhere (I quickly learned this in the army). Your advice is never worth more than what you were paid for it. We are all part of a larger whole; think, act and teach accordingly. The only person who may consider you the most important person in the world is you. If in doubt, get a cat. Find and use good role models; be one yourself. As Ben Franklin said, "Emulate Jesus and Socrates." College 1964-65: University of Oregon, Eugene OR (designated as a pre-law major but actually majored in partying; flunked out in December 1965). January 1966: Moved to southern California. 1966-68: Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa CA (immediately enrolled in local community college; somehow got interested in computers; received AA in computer programming - the only degree that ever got me a job!). 1968-70: In the Army. 1971-72: Golden West College, Huntington Beach CA (by this time I was married and working full-time at night; switched my interest to philosophy, then added history; took one year ...Expand for more
of classes to complete lower division requirements). 1972-74: California State University, Long Beach CA (received BA with honors in double major of philosophy and history). 1974-76: California State University, Long Beach CA (received secondary teaching credential and another BA in political science). July 1976: Returned to Oregon. 1977-79: Reed College, Portland OR (while working at Reed, received masters of arts in liberal studies and Oregon secondary teaching credential). 1988-92: Northwestern School of Law, Lewis & Clark College, Portland OR (finally returned to original college goal; received JD degree). 1999-2001: Clackamas Community College, Oregon City OR (took two years of religion classes just for the fun of it). Workplace 1994-Present: Director of Administrative Computing, Reed College, Portland OR. 1991-1994: Associate Director of Administrative Computing, Reed College, Portland OR. 1989-1991: Assistant Director of Administrative Computing, Reed College, Portland OR. 1980-1989: Computer Progammer/Systems Analyst, Reed College, Portland OR. 1976-1980: Computer operator, Reed College, Portland OR. 1971-1976: Computer operator, Orange County Register Newspaper, Santa Ana, CA 1969-1970: Personnel specialist, US Army, Qui Nhon, Vietnam. 1968-1969: Personnel specialist, US Army, Fort Bragg, NC. 1968: Training, US Army, Fort Bliss, TX and Redstone Arsenal, AL.
