Gary's Story
A big ole ground squirrel is being observed by a coopers hawk that seems to have just taken another bath in our small pond in front of our home. Th hawk hangs around this area and prefers to prey on the doves, quail and other birds we feed. He caught a dove a couple evenings ago. Doves are favored by this species. He is now back in the pond to finish his bath and the water is flying. He flew into our front window earlier and left water on it. He was not injured. This year we have had a number of visitors to our yard. These includ a mule deer doe and her yearling buck with antlers in the velvet, several coyo...Expand for more
tes, javelina and at least one bobcat. One of our labrador was badly injured by a havelina while I was quail hunting with them. They inflict a nasty bite with their "tusks". they are pretty aggressive guardians of their young.
We have one lab now as her mother was hit by a speeding neighbor in her suburban. She was a very good quail dog and a real loving member of our pack. Her daughter, Annie, is also a real loving pack member as was her father who was a chocolate lab. He has died and belonged to my son. His name was Bailey and made the longest retrieve on a quail I knocked down that I have ever observed.
