Gary's Story

After graduating from MHS in 1960, I continued my education at MCC, graduating in 1962, I then joined the US Navy, with boot camp in San Diego, CA, then to Dam Neck, VA for missile technician training. After going to school for a year and a half, I was assigned to the USS Proteus AS-19, located in Holy Loch, Scotland. I rode the Proteus back to Charleston, SC in Jun/Jul 1964. I was then transferred to the USS Holland AS-32, located in Rota, Spain. I was discharged from the Navy in Aug. 1966, and headed back to Marshalltown. I then enrolled at Northeast Missouri State College and completed my undergraduate studies in Aug. 1968 with a BSE degree in physics. I taught school in Iowa for 2 years, then went back to NMSC for graduate school, receiving my MA degree in May 1971. Then it was one more year of teaching in Iowa. It was then time for a career change. While looking for a job, and living at home, working for Russ Franke's dad, hauling corn to the elevator, I found and got a job working as a quality control chemist for American Cyanamid Co. in Hannibal, MO. I relocated to Missouri in mid Dec. 1972 and stayed at the same plant, doing several jobs, ending when I was downsized in Jun. 1999(26 1/2 years on the job). After being forced to retire at the age of 56, I was fortunate that I haven't had to go back to work. I'm still retired, playing a lot of golf, active in the First Christian Church, Palmyra, MO, Kiwanis, ...Expand for more
and volunteering in the community. In 1985, after seeing an article in the local paper, I went to a new singles square dance club, being started in Quincy, IL. The founder of that club would become my wife on Sep. 1, 1990. After being a bachelor for all those years, I finally became married. Her name is Ruth, and she is one of the best things to come along. She had a son who lives in Lenoir, NC. We have one grand-daughter, who is a junior in high school. One of the latest projects that I have been involved with is the formation of the USS Holland AS-32 Association, of which I am the treasurer. Our ship is now in the fleet reserve, Suisun Bay, CA, and our last reunion was held in Concord, CA, where we took a charter boat out to where the ship is located. We are the only former crew to make that trip. We were accompanied by two former captains. We are now in the planning stages for our next reunion, to be held in Jacksonville, FL, in Jul. 2010. In Jun. 2009, Ruth, myself, my sister Andrea (MHS 1962), and her husband Jim made a cruise to Alaska. After 7 days on the cruise ship, we then traveled by rail up to Denali National Park, spending 3 nights, then back to Anchorage. During our visit, we were able to see the top of Mt. McKinley two days in a row. What a magnificent trip. We are now planning our next cruise, through the Panama Canal in Mar. 2010. I still live in Palmyra, MO and love the small town atmosphere.
