Gavin's Story
Life
Ok, quick and dirty recap: I was teaching and doing research at the University of Chicago for a long time (91-05), but I'm now working on the management team of an aging and health care focused philanthropy, The John A. Hartford Foundation, in New York City.
My life today would hardly be recognizable to the 18 year old that graduated from OHS back in 1974. I went straight from high school to the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, thinking I was heading for a career in the arts. While I was there, I took a few courses in anthropology at The New School, and got turned on to "real" school. I was also sort of interested in medicine because all my friend's fathers were docs and I was very impressed with them. So, I transferred to SUNY, Brockport to finish college and then headed off to Wisconsin for a job in the State Division of Public Health.
Started a family in Milwaukee (two lovely daughters, now "grown"), and then soon decided to return to grad school. Did a PhD at the University of Chicago (Medical Sociology) and then stuck around teachin...Expand for more
g and doing clinical research in geriatrics at the medical school.
In 2005 I came back to New York to take a job in philanthropy and work on a national platform to extend some of the work I was doing locally in Chicago. Our work helps prepare the nation's health care workforce (docs, nurses, social workers) to care for our aging population. In 2010 I went back to Chicago to join the faculty of the University of Chicago in the Department of Medicine. I teach in the College and the medical school, conduct various types of research, and of course, handle a full spread of administrative duties.
In the meantime, I met and married my second wife, a beautiful Japanese educator who was in Chicago finishing her own graduate work. We now live together in New York city and travel to Japan frequently. I dabble in photography from time to time, but raising a family and work have kept me pretty busy! Maybe I'll get back into the darkroom one of these days.
Hope all my friends from Ossining are having wonderful lives -- love to hear from all of you. Gavin
