Gayla's Story
Life
I live in a new home outside of Houston in a master-planned community in Atascocita. The subdivision has a neighborhood school, walk/bicycle paths, manicured lawns, etc. It is very quiet and the neighbors tend to know each other.
I have a beagle and a cat, Mandy and Austin respectively. I have been dating someone for a year and a half. We are avid Astros Fans and went to over 25 games this past year with plans to attend 14 this year (better seats).
I have a very demanding job directing a department that writes grants for a large organization. Ten years ago, I started as the lone grants specialist and now supervise six staff. Besides working, I spend time walking my dog, going to festivals and Astros games with my boyfriend, and visiting my sister in Galveston.
From high school, the friends I best remember are Cheryl, Glenda, Janice, Kim, Kevin, Rocky, Teresa and Steve. We had such good times that I hope they also remember, including those lovely salads in the cafeteria. I have gone to all but one reunion, hoping to see them to no avail. o meet, if it would feel natural as if we had never separated.
College
I graduated from Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelors in Social Work and SHSU with a Masters in Sociology/Social Research - ten years later. Although I commuted to both, I had the best time at SAM because for nine months, I got to play the full time student - only working part-time for the university.
I met some wonderful people while at SAM; Stephanie, Tommy and Vicky, Tina, Pat and Pam. We lost Pam after college. We did not keep in touch, but I wish them the best.
I still keep in contact with a friend from SFA. She was in the Social Work Program while I was there. Later we both worked at the State School in Lufkin before she moved back to Houston. Actually, she was the one that encouraged me to accept a job in Conroe at Tri-County MHMR. I found other friends at Tri-County that I still see now - Dinah, Teresa, Sandy, Yevonne, Beulah. I couldn't make it without them. I also consider Rhonda my friend even though we don't see each other - she lives in Louisiana. I feel blessed knowing all of them.
