Gaylen Sue Barbour:

CLASS OF 1964
Beltsville, MD

Gaylen Sue's Story

I guess this is where I do a 51- year synopsis of my life since graduating from High Point High. As there were over 600 students in the Class of '64, I'm having a hard time recognizing most of the names listed on this website. To be totally honest, I didn't know many of you back then when we were going to school. Since it was comprised of many neighboring cities and towns, we all seemed to have our own cliques -- geographic or academic. I was from the Greenbelt group and we weren't greatly involved in extracurricular activities -- we wanted to get home and "hang around" the Center and be "cool." In school, all of you who knew me would identify me as Sue Martin. I didn't reclaim my first name until I was in my early 50's. After graduation I went to work for the U. S. Government, got married two years later and had two children, a beautiful daughter and wonderful son. We resided in Greenbelt and eventually moved to New Carrollton. Unfortunately, that marriage to Gary Barbour (class of '62), only lasted 8 years. By then I was back working for the Government again. During my single years, I took some P.G. Community College and University of Maryland classes. Never made it to a degree. While enjoying my single life I met a man and eventually married him. That chapter lasted 12 or so years too long and it is a chapter in my life I don't reflect on any longer. I got rid of his name, going back to Barbour. I still had two wonderful kids and worked for the Government. During the demise of my second marriage, our new ambassado...Expand for more
r to Oslo, Norway asked me to accompany her for a four-year tour there. I had worked for her when she was Director of the Peace Corps for eight years. Since my daughter was taking off for the University of Hawaii by then and my son moved to his father's, it seemed like a good idea. It was a wonderful four years full of meeting and making friends with many wonderful Norwegians, and individuals from other diplomatic missions. It also included a lot of travel throughout Scandinavia, Europe and even Russia. Alas, the tour was over and I was back in D.C. pounding the pavement looking for a job. While I was in Norway, I had brought a home in Lanham that my young adult children settled in so when I returned I moved back in on them. I landed a job in the White House and four years later moved to the U.S. Treasury Department next door. At age 55, I decided to retire from the Government. I truly had some of the best bosses in the Government, more opportunities than I ever dreamed possible. I just got tired of the commute and the political hassles of working for political appointees. Occasionally I worked part-time and did some volunteer work. By then, most of my friends and family had moved to the Odenton, Crofton or Annapolis area. After being awakened by a SWAT team at 5:00 a.m. pounding on a neighbor's door, I decided to get out of Lanham. Thus, I sold my house and moved to a new house in Edgewater. I'm close to my family, have 5 incredible grandchildren and lots of friends and activities to keep me busy. Life is good!
