Gaylene's Story
Most everyone I run into from high school says I haven't changed, although I'm an even bigger ZZ Top freak than I was then. I've gotten a little older like everybody else. I prefer to think I am still the same genuine, honest person I've always been. I still live in the same house I did in high school. Been here for probably going on 32 years now. It's my home and I love it.
I share my home with my mom and my eight pets: cats Skinny, Pepper, Frank, dog Foxy, birds Hekyll & Jekyll and Simon. The newest little member showed up at my door September 8: Leo. I love him but really didn't plan on having another kitty. (Update: Hekyll died September 26.) I honestly wish people would spay and neuter their pets. There are far too many homeless animals, and I sure can't take them all in. But since about 60,000 cats are killed in US shelters EVERY DAY, I refuse to relinquish Leo to a shelter. "Don't breed or buy while millions die." Save a life, adopt from a shelter.
I do some freelance desktop publishing/graphic design, besides my "regular job" of driving school bus for good 'ol Beaverton School District. They just retired the bus I'd been driving for five years. Loved that old thing, and was very resistant to getting a new one, but the brand new one is quickly growing on me. Especially since I got the mechanics to custom install a speaker for me so I can hear my radio! AND cd's. It has a cd player in it, can you believe that?
My dad made ...Expand for more
me a second owner of a '68 Barracuda fastback for my BHS graduation/18th birthday present, so that was my daily driver for 5 years. I restored it as original and have won several trophies with it, including first place in the Forest Grove Concours d'Elegance in 2004. I also have a '73 Challenger Rallye. If I needed a new car, no question it would be a 2009 Challenger RT, but I need my current daily driver (an '03 Ranger XLT 4x4) for hauling stuff. I go camping and snowboarding and I also occasionally play drums at gigs. My kit wouldn't fit in the Challenger and I wouldn't want to take it up the snowy mountain, either! I also inherited dad's '47 Willys Jeep when he died in 1993, although it's still where it was then and I have never driven it. Someday.
I went back to college spring term 08. This time I'm not quitting until I get that Associates degree. I'm after an Associate of Arts Transfer degree with the half-assed intention of transferring to PSU for a bachelors so I can be an elementary school teacher. I say "half-assed" because it will take a very long time to get to the end, so we'll just have to wait and see how it goes. The luck of the draw has given me kidney disease, so I'm on the transplant list - I feel just fine right now - and hoping it doesn't take me out and delay my plans for too long. lol... if you know anybody who wouldn't mind being tested for a match...
Come back again, I just might add some more later. Bye!
