Gene's Story

After graduation from Carmel High in June of 1972. I moved to Phoenix,Arizona, and spent 6 months attending DeVry University. When that did not go as planned, I joined the USAF in Feb 1973. Spent 4 years in the service, working on F4 Phantom fighters. Trained at Lackland AFB in Texas, and Lowry AFB in Denver Colorado. Much of the remaining time was spent at MacDill AFB, Tampa Fla. And no! I will never live in Florida again !!! Released from active duty in Feb 1977. moved to Danbury CT. Worked at National SemiConductor for 2 years. Took a leave of absence in early summer 1979, backpacked across Europe-Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria and Germany. Some real adventures there, sometimes I am a bit surprised I made it back in one piece. Returned to the US in late August of 79. Moved to Danbury Ct that same year, working at Eaton/Lorlin Corp, as an electronics tech. Married to a girl from across the state line (Newtown,Ct) in May of 1980, which came with a built in family as Shelley had a 4 year old son (Brett). In January, of 1981, we had our 1st child Megan. She was followed by Courtney in Oct 1984. That same year saw us purchase our 1st house in Newtown. That same month and year I graduated from Bridgeport Engineering Inst (now incorporated within Fairfield University)with a BSEE. Lived in Newtown, from 1984-1990, during which I went thru several job changes, from Lorlin, to Eaton, to General Data Comm, and finally SMC. In April 1990, after another layoff, we moved to North Carolina. In Sept 1990, Shelley opened her dance studio in Wake Forest, NC DanceWorks Studio. I helped out as best I could. The following 18 years have seen more job changes from Memorex-Telex, to Avant!, to a small networking firm ZipCom, then onto EDS for the next 15 years. In 1992, we moved from Youngsville to Wake Forest, primarily because of the better schools (kids were growing fast). I coached several sports over those years, soccer, softball, baseball basketball, and gymnastics. The Dance Studio gr...Expand for more
ew to where we began incorporating gymnastics within it. I got a lot more involved, as we changed locations twice, each time expanding to larger facilities. We currently have a 10,000 sq ft facility, and yet its still not big enough! When people ask if I have kids, I say yes about 250 of them. This gets some really strange looks, until I break down and explain :) Megan graduated from Wake Forest HS in 1998, and attended Appalachian State University in Boone NC. She graduated in May 2002, and entered the US Army (did ROTC while in school). She did tours in Germany, Korea and Iraq (1 year). Left the Army as a captain in Aug 2006, and is now living in Houston,Texas. She was married last year, April 26, 2008 Courtney our youngest graduated from high school in 2002, then attended UNC Pembroke, Appalachian State, and finally UNC Chapel Hill where she graduated in May 2006 Courtney is also teaching dance and gymnastics at our gym/studio and is in charge of our competitive dance and gymnastics programs. She is pursuing her teaching certificate as she hopes to become an elementary school teacher - Good luck with that! Just recently (well October 2008) the company I had been with for 12 years (EDS) was bought out by Hewlett Packard (HP). As with most buyouts these days, layoffs began almost immediately. I survived the first cut, but not the second. Luckily for me I obtained another position within a few weeks and am now working as a Sr. Unix Systems Engineer for a small Biotech firm in the North Carolina Research Triangle Park area. Still there for now .... we'll see what the future brings.. I won't go quietly For anyone that has read this far, drop a line, its great to hear from old friends! So far I've gotten back in touch with Nadine Bailey, Chloe Bodt, Ken O'Connor, Marie Wind , Barbara Delaney (Kessler). A lot of you are still out there, so don't be shy!! Remember this great line: Its better to fight and flame out, then it is to simply fade away! Keep you flame burning brightly everyone!
