Gene's Story
Life
Now that it's the quiet time in Door County I guess I'll finally get this bio done. After high school I attended Wisconsin State University in Stevens Point where I honed my hunting and fishing skills and learned that a 16 oz. cup of Point Special Beer was only $.25. After two semesters of that and a close brush with getting engaged, I decided I was wasting my parents money and went to work at the Glen Ellyn Police Dept. It was sort of strange working with people who used to chase you around, especially Officer Kleinofen, but he and I became and still are, very good friends.I bought a new 1968 Chevelle SS 396 and life was good. I got married in 1969 to a girl from Glenbard East class of '66. I started with the DuPage Co. Sheriff's Dept. in 1970. I eventually pulled the engine out of the Chevelle and jacked it up to about 430 hp.In 1972 I was told to get rid of the Chevelle and get a family car. Thirteen years and three kids later I got divorced. Sure wish I still had that Chevelle! In 1984 I married Jan Rondeau. She was from Westmont and also worked at the Sheriff's Dept. In 1995 we bought 20 acres near Baileys Harbor in anticipation of our retirement. We had a house built in 1998 and we both retired in March of 1999. She was in charge o...Expand for more
f the criminal records division and I was supervisor of the gang suppresion unit. We put Glen Ellyn in the rearview mirror and moved to Door Co. I spent the summers as Divemaster on a friends dive boat. There are many interesting shipwrecks in this area. I got my real estate license in the fall of 2000 and have been working for a small family owned company in Sister Bay ever since. It's nice because I can pretty much control my time and travel when I want. In May of 2003 Jan was diagnosed with colon cancer. They were able to remove it surgically but it had advanced to the liver. She had a year and seven months of chemotherapy and passed away at home on New Years Day 2005. My kids and grand kids were there with her as were her parents. She did not have any children of her own but had become very close to mine. My oldest, Heather, born in 1973, lives in Lakeland, Florida with her husband and daughter. Emily, born in 1975, lives in Doha, Qatar with her husband, two sons, and three daughters. Dan, born in 1979, lives in Houston, Texas and has 2 sons and a daughter. I'm going along fine and staying put for the time being. If anybody gets up this way look me up at Kellstrom-Ray Agency, 920-854-2353. They can find me or give you my cell phone number.
