George E. "Scott"'s Story

Life I married Nina Kendrick (North high, class of '68) in 1975. Our son Michael, was born in 1980. After graduating from Law School at Gonzaga University in 2005, he currently works as a Labor Relations Assistant for the Pacific Maritime Association headquartered in San Francisco. He was promoted to Personnel Administrator in 2011. My wife, has been in the Title and Escrow business for over 30 years, and continues to work in that field today. She is currently the Vice-President/Escrow Manager for the Stewart Title Corp. in the State of Oregon. I played guitar, organ and bass in various rock bands around the Phoenix area during my high school years until early 70's after graduating from West Phoenix High School in 1967. Last played in the cellar at the old "JD's" nightclub on Scottsdale Road. I also gave guitar lessons for several years both during and after high school. I owned and rode motorcycles from age 14 off and on throughout my life until age 46. I purchased my first car (a 1937 Plymouth) when I was also 14. My second car was a 1948 Chevy Coupe when I was a 15 year old sophomore. When I drove the Chevy, it frequently would not go into reverse when I needed it to, and I needed additional person-power to push it backward out of any parking space that I had pulled in to when it would act up. I wonder if GaryFlindt, Phil Polich, Rich Buchmann, Dan Dierken or any one of a number of other folks remember having to push that car backward out of parking places to get it going? Anyway, I wish I still owned either or both of those cars today. I drove race cars semi-professionally for 11 years starting in the late 60's. I have recently gotten back into racing and have built a drag race car that has a fiberglass replica of a 1923 Model T Ford body. I am now building a supercharged, fuel injected, methanol burning Chevrolet motor for it that will power it to over 200 MPH in approximately 7.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile. I worked as a mechanic from the late 60's until 1972, when I became employed as a firefighter for the Phoenix Fire Department. I was a Certified Paramedic for 11 (I became the 16th person in the State of Ariz. to obtain paramedic certification after the Paramedic Law was enacted by the legislature in 1974) of the 23 years that I was employed there. I promoted through the ranks and retired as a Deputy Chief in 1995, when I accepted appointment as the Fire Chief of the City of Lake Oswego, Oregon Fire Department (a Portland suburb)in 1995. I graduated from Phoenix College with an Associate Degree in Fire Science in 1975, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Industrial Management from ASU in 1983, and earned a Master's Degree in Public Adminisration from ASU in 1994. I also graduated from ASU's two year Certified Public Manager Program from the ASU Advanced Public Executive's Program (APEP)in 1992. I retired from Lake Oswego in 2001, and worked parttime as a Project Analyst/Associate Consultant for an emergency services consulting firm in Wilsonville, Oregon. I formed my own emergency managment consulting business in 2003, George Dodd Consulting, L.L.C., specializing in providing emergency management consulting services for fire departments across the country. I am still married and still reside in Lake Oswego, Oregon and I would greatly welcome hearing from any of my old schoolmates. Unfortunately, I missed the 2006 combined reunion in October due to back surgery, but am eagerly looking forward to attending the next one. In October of 1996, my 10th intervertebral disk ruptured spontaneously, paralyzing me from that point on down. I have been confined to a wheelchair ever since. School I attended Franklin Elementary School at 17th ave. & Mcdowell, K-6 in Phoenix, AZ. I attended Kenilworth grade school (also in Phoenix) for seventh and eighth grades. I attended and graduated from West Phoenix High School, 1963 - 1967. I attended Phoenix (Community) College sporadically from 1967 - 1982, and graduated with an Associate in Fire Science from there in 1975. I attended ASU from 1980 until 198...Expand for more
3, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Industrial Management in 1983. I returned to ASU in 1991 and graduated with a Master of Public Administration in 1994. Also, I graduated from ASU's two-year Certified Public Manager Program (CPM) in 1992, through ASU's Advanced Public Executive Program (APEP) in the School of Public Affairs. I attended and completed various courses at the National Fire Academy in Emmittsburg, MD in 1986, 1987 and 1989. College Graduated in 1975 from Phoenix College with an Associate Degree in Fire Science. Earned a Bachelor Degree Magna Cum Laude in Industrial Management with a minor in fire science in 1983 from Arizona State University. Earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from ASU in 1994. Workplace I worked as a mechanic, a rock musician, gave guitar lessons and raced as a semi-professional race car driver for several years after high school. I continued to race until the late 1970's. After becoming a member of the Phoenix fire Department, I worked my way through the ranks of the department to the level of Deputy Chief in 1986. I became the 16th person in the State of Arizona to earn certification as an Emergency Paramedic in 1975, and maintained that certification for eleven years. I promoted to engineer in 1975, fire captain in 1979, and held that position for for approximately six years before promoting to battalion chief and then deputy chief in '86. I was one of the first chief officers to complete the Arizona Dept. of Emergency Services eight week Hazardous Materials Technician course in 1990. In my nine years as a deputy chief, I supervised the Regional Fire Training Academy, the Regional Communications Center (the seventh busiest Fire Dispatch Center in the U.S. at the time), and the Computer Services Bureau where I served as the Records Management Administrator during that period. Further, I served as a District Commander from 1988 through 1991. My responsibilities during this period included management and supervision of the East Phoenix fire stations and over 200 personnel, as well as all of their emergency and non-emergency operations. This included the fire station protecting Sky Harbor International Airport. I retired from Phoenix Fire in 1995 to accept appointment as Fire Chief of the City of Lake Oswego (a suburb of Portland), Oregon Fire Department in 1995. After retiring from Lake Oswego in 2001, I worked for an emergency services consulting firm as an associate consultant/project analyst until 2003, when I formed George Dodd Consulting, L.L.C., specializing in emergency services consulting for fire departments around the country. In October of 1996, I experienced a life altering event when my 10th intervertebral disc suddenly ruptured, permanently paralyzing me from that point on down. Following emergency surgery, the first thing that the surgeon said to me was "do not expect to get anything back." Contrary to his dire prediction, I began to regain sensory and motor functions in just a few days. I continued to steadily regain both motor and sensory functions in my lower body for several years. These positive returns caused the doctors and therapists to revise my prognosis and therapy regimen to a plan of regaining some type of "functional ambulation." Within a few months of my injury, I was spending most my therapy sessions relearning to walk again, first in parallel bars and then in a walker. Things were beginning to look very encouraging. However, I began experiencing shoulder problems within a couple of years that ultimately halted my walking plans. I underwent a left shoulder replacement, and was planning to have the right shoulder replaced as well. The left shoulder never has recovered to the point where I can put enough weight on it to stand in parallel bars or a walker. The right shoulder has not been replaced as yet. I am still working on rehabilitating my left shoulder while continuing to work on my leg strength in hopes of once again learning to use a walker (at least part-time), but that is now(2014) looking like a long-shot.
