George "Bubba"'s Story

I've scanned in a higher res version of the Student section of the Yearbook. If you would like to download a copy go to clanmcmuffin.com/yearbook.html and click the Yearbook cover. After high school, I enrolled at UT where I received a BS in Electrical Engineering. I later received an MS in Engineering Administration. I spent my career working with the consulting firm of Allen & Hoshall, Inc. and Jackson Energy Authority (formerly Jackson Utility Division). I retired from JEA in 2014 and relocated to Knoxville to spend more time with my daughter, Amy. In retirement, I spend my time travelling, doing Ancestry research and developing 3D engineering drawings. In spring of 2017 along with my sister, Cissy, and brother, John, I traveled to England in search of my great great grandfather, William Flew.. He lived in Long Ashton, just outside of Bristol. We strode the gardens that he tended as a gardener on the Ashton Estate, walked the pathway in front of his 1841 cottage and attended services in the church he attended in the early 1800s. We stood before his tombstone in the churchyard of All Saints Church. We also visited the childhood church of my great great grandmother, Sarah Watkins, in Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales. Not having known any blood relative grandparents, this was a very significant journey. I spring of 2018, along with my daughter, Amy, and several friends, we journeyed to Italy. We spent a week in Tuscany visiting Sienna and Florence. We also trekked the hill towns of Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulchiano, stopping at vineyards along the way. We spent a day...Expand for more
in Assisi, home of St. Francis. Some of us then flew to Sicily and spent several days in the village of Acireale on the slopes of Mt. Etna visiting the Greek ruins at Agrigento. I completed the trip, along with my friend Sharon Campbell, crossing at Messina and driving up the Boot of Italy to Rome. Along the way we overnighted at Naples visiting the ruins of Pompei. We spent the last day exploring the ruins of Rome. In the fall of 2018, along with Cissy and John, we visited Ireland and Northern Ireland in search of our Stuart roots. We stayed in Ballygalley in County Antrim just northwest of Belfast and dined each night at the pub just across the highway. We visited the Presbyterian church at Tyrone's Ditches where our 2nd greatgrandfather, William Stuart was baptized and later married Sarah Paul. There we discovered a gravestone that led to the link with our Irish Stuart's back to Scotland. (That will be a future trip.) We also visited several locations of scenes from the HBO series Game of Thrones. In fall of 2019 along with my childhood friend and fellow JHS grad, Allen Green we took a 2341 mile trip from Seattle up through Vancouver then south along the Pacific Coast Highway to the Mexico border south of San Diego. This trip took us along cliff side roads overlooking the Pacific Ocean 800 feet below, through majestic redwood forests and over near desert terrain. We stayed 12 nights in 10 different motels, crossed 16 major iconic bridges, saw 13 lighthouses, ate 37 meals at 36 different restaurants and took a total of 3000 photographs. Would I do it again? Probably not.
