George's Story

Hey Paladins! You may remember me as the tall, skinny guy in the corduroy pants. I liked to draw, play baseball, fish, waterski/hydro slide, shoot, video game junkie, computers, repair TV's, build models, lift weights and was taking electronics class all four years of HS. Senior year I drove that blue and white Ford Maverick 4 door POS to school. So just to catch up: After South Plantation I got an AA degree in Commercial Art from BCC. And, since I was about 16, I had been lifting weights to gain weight and 'muscle'. When I graduated HS I was 6'4" and about 170 lbs. Yeah, skinny. After HS I really started hitting the weights and nutrition, devoting more and more time and effort into it. Getting bigger and stronger, by '85 I had gotten to about 225lbs, and then I had gotten a job at the SFRJDC [Juvie] as a detention care worker in the transportation dept, thanks to Elizabeth Durrett's dad. Guess he thought I was big and scary. Anyhow that job allowed for an even more intense workout regimen. So for two more years I ate, slept and breathed body building and got up to 250 lbs of muscle. [no steroids, but that was my nickname at the DC.] I was working out a Masters Gym near 84 and University and sometimes, some of the Miami Dolphin players would come in for a workout, and I'd look at them and think 'eh, he's not so big IRL'. Yeah by then I could pick up a car by its bumper and could have given Arnold a run for it. Also around that time I bought my motorcycle, an 88 Yamaha FZR 1000. Damn I loved that bike. New in '88. Wrecked it 6 times, totaled it once and then rebuilt it with a custom paint job and tricked out the intake and exhaust, all done myself. Had it up to 185mph on I-75. Alas it was stolen in '94. In 1986 I had to get a real job so I started working for Aaron's Rent to Own and learned a lot about running a retail business. Going from delivery driver to Credit Manager to Sales Manager to General Manager. [All the while, slowly retiring from bodybuilding] In 1991 I bought a used '88 Monte Carlo SS, Damn I love that car. It was stolen once, [attempted theft and/or broken into a total of 4 times :( ] got it back and used the insurance money to restore it to better than new in 1996. I still have it. In 1993 I was offered a position at an Ad Agency/ Design Group as a graphic designer. This was right around the time that that industry was changing via 'Desktop Publishing' [computer] capability increases and cost reductions. So they paid for more schooling in the art of pre-press and computer programs who's names you may recognize like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark at the Palm Beach Photographic Workshops. I guess my background in computers, drawing and video gaming had prepped me because as Forest Gump said, I took to I like a duck to water. I worked there for abo...Expand for more
ut 9 years becoming an Art Director and self learning web design and flash animations, and some necessary programing languages such as HTML and Java Script, also Visual Basic. Basically if it had to do with creativity and a computer, I could do it. Right before I left the business I was starting into CGI animations using a couple of programs, one of which they used in the movie 'Contact', and learning C++ programming. But I had gotten married to Louise in 1997 and needed to make more money 8| So I started looking for other positions at other Agencies, and soon found out that I wasn't going to be making more by moving. So I changed careers. In 2003 I started working for Global Industries as a Sales Rep. An Office Furniture Manufacturer and Distributor. 5th largest in North America. I've been working here ever since and am now in the operations side of the business. I bought my first house in 2005 about a week before the real estate bubble burst, using one of those toxic ARM mortgages. In about a year we were upside down by about 280k, and in another year the mtg reset doubling the already ridiculous monthly payments. So we went to war with the mtg company. 6 years later and 25k in legal fees and we finally settled with a massive principle reduction and monthly payment reduction. :) I don't have any human children, my kids are dogs. MacIntosh [after the computer] a White Lab, Wallace [Braveheart] a Catahoula/Lab mix, and Pippin [Lord of the Rings] a white Mini Schnauzer. We all live in Lake Worth now. Still married, I'm allowed to shoot every once in a while, and play video games on my PS4. The Monte Carlo has seen better days and needs another restoration. My main form of exercise now is walking Wally and the endless yard work. I'm a steady 215lbs and have been for the last 10 years or so. [ I need to start lifting again. I still have the weights that I had in HS in my garage.] But I've weathered well over the years. Must have been all the vitamins, LOL. My dad passed away in 1993 of complications due to ALS [Lou Gehrig's] and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. My mom died 2013 of liver cancer after having a stroke and living in Assisted Living facility for 4 years. She's interred alongside my dad in Arlington. And my MacIntosh died in 2012 of multiple myeloma at age 11 1/2. My sister Linda is still married to the same guy she was with in HS and they have a successful AC/HVAC/Mechanical business in Orlando, and two kids and a few grandkids now. Everything else is good though right now. I can't believe that the 80's music that we listened to in HS and College has outlasted the 90's and the '00 music, but it was great stuff wasn't it? I have some great memories of those days. Well that's about it for now, hope everyone else is doing well. Lots of love to you all.
