George's Story

Hello fellow Classmates... It has been many years since I have been here and I guess an update regarding my life and experiences are long overdue. Anyway, after high school graduation and a change in plans to enlist into the U.S. Army in July of 1970 (due to the draft being in effect) led me to enlist later in the same year. Having served my boot camp at Fort Ord, California, I eventually ended up with the 82nd Airborne Division (paratroopers) as 16R2P (Vulcan unit) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. and was honorably discharged in late 1972. This in a way became a tribute to so many of my relatives (my father included) who paid their dues in past wars and conflicts. Thank God there were those in the generation before mine and mine as well that found another way to remain safe at home. Upon returning back to Southern California, I enrolled at El Camino College into the Administrative of Justice program which eventually led me to become sworn in as police officer for the City of Torrance in November of 1973. After 29 years of service as a police officer, I managed to retire in December of 2002 with a wonderful lifetime pension. Now to fill in the gaps ..... At this point plans made in high school did follow in chronological order...graduation, military time, attend college on my GI Bill, acquire a career with a police department and marry at age 24. At the present time I am and continue to be happily married to my wife of 40 years ( Annette Waits ... Class of 1973) and we have 4 wonderful children...3 handsome sons and a beautiful daughter. All have enjoyed a wonderful life of love, support and respect and free of pain or tragedy, focusing on the positive things that life has to offer. All of our children have acquired their 4 year college degrees by attending universities both in and out of state. Our oldest son who is now married acquired his Masters and Doctorate degree and works full time that led him and his lovely wife to purchase their first house in August of 2012. Our first grandchild (Bethany) was born May 9, 2014 and doing quite well growing into a healthy and beautiful little girl (3 teeth have surfaced so far as of early January 2015. Our daughter furthered her education upon returning from Lewis and Clark University in Portland, Oregon by completing a two year program in one year and was recently awarded her CPA thru the State of California. The auditing firm she has been employed with for the past 5 plus years recently promoted her to a managers position which is one step below being offered a partnership in years to come if all works out. Our third oldest lives in Austin, Texas and as of last December 2015 completed and was awarded his Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy Medicine. Between his stay at the University of Pacific where he played in Division I volleyball and now he lived several months in Beijing, China and later played professional volleyball in Europe. We are happy to say that he has now returned back to southern California and after a few months of intense studying took and passed his national board exams. Our youngest son who doubled majored in Psychology and Philosphy was awarded his Masters Degree in Human Factors at Long Beach State University. He is currently living in the silicon valley where he is now employed with GOOGLE. Annette is now and has been a professional quilter for several years, running a successful out of home business which keeps her busy, but manages to break away when a need and/or desire for us to travel presents itself. As for myself, I found that being retired was somewhat boring during the first two years after leaving the Torrance Police Department. While no longer having a desire to keep my private pilots license active or pick up where I left off with a few hours of helicoptor training, I was able to trade my passion for flying by acquiring a position with JetBlue Airways out of nearby Long Beach Airport (about a 5 minute commute). My position in Airport Operations as a counter and gate agent provides me with a wonderful opportunity to work with so many exciting people and cultures from all over the world. This has been a very rewarding experience for myself as I continue to learn from others what real friends and respect for others is all about. My airline flight benefits has provided both Annette and myself, as well as our children the opportunity to travel quite freely, both domestically and internationally. We have also become quite fond of traveling via cruise ships and will manage to do that more often when I acquire a second retirement anytime after October of 2015 when eligible. When not working or traveling, I work on our rental property located close by which makes it convenient to my time schedule. Since all but one of our children are no longer living at home, we manage to host family and friends from all over the U.S throughout the year. My experiences over the years has taught me that what you put into this life is what you get out of life. There are so many wonderful people from so many wonderful cultures that have so much to share and should be treated with the same respect as you yourself wish to be treated. So in closing I can honestly say that after high school, I managed to move on in a positive way that led to bigger and better things. Life is great and continues to get better every day. UPDATE: Annette and I will be blessed with the birth of a our first grandchild (Bethany K. Morales) in May of 2015...everyone is healthy and looking forward to this wonderful event in our lives. We both just returned from a 2 week cruise (our 8th in as many years) that took us from Fort Lauderdale, Florida thru the Panama Canal, misc. stops along the way and ending in the Port of Los Angeles. In late summer of 2014 we plan to visit Hawaii (preferably Maui) again as we have not been there for many years. Working around family events gets easier all the time since we always manage to get the work and other obligations out of the way first. In October of 2015 I plan to complete my 10 year airline obligation and obtain another retirement that will allow Annette and myself to travel more on an international level without having to be tied down as much to my current work schedule. So for now I hope all is well with you and your families...so many years have gone by, but what wonderful memories to share with those we can. UPDATE: Year 2014 has been quite wonderful to all members of our family. Our daughter Jessica married in October and along with her new husband spent a fantastic honeymoon in Aruba....their skills and experiences as deep sea divers have provided us with many interesting photos of their love for the water and traveling. With my oldest and 2nd oldest now married, our third oldest will also wed in May of 2015...more planning but seems to get easier after the first few. Annette and I recently closed out 2014 with a trip to Portland, Oregon, Austin, Texas and as of the first week in January of 2015 enjoyed a wonderful trip to Las Vegas for a quick overnight stay since staying at home is not as much fun. Rather than add or modify the original profile of my classmates.com account, I will now include "UPDATES" to avoid any repeated information. UPDATE (June 8, 2015): Son Garrett passed his national boards, married 2 weeks ago to our newest member of the family Vannesa and now living in Texas south of Dallas. We just returned from a 2nd reception given by her side of family in Fort Myers, Florida. We took advantage of the extra time and drove up to Savannah, Georgia and on the return trip flew to Austin, Texas for a family reunion giving by Annettes side of the family.on Youngest son Greg has completed his Masters Degree from Long Beach State University and living up in San Francisco area where he and his girlfriend both work for GOOGLE doing what I refer to as rocket scientists related issues (way over my head, but I am still the dad and very proud of course). So at this time our children have acquired 4 Bachelors of Arts Degrees, 2 Master Degrees, 2 Doctorates and 1 CPA. I could retire from my airlines in less than 4 months but will probably stay longer since I am quite active and prefer not to sit around and wilt. Update: Sept. 8, 2015 Well Annette and I just returned from another cruise..this time thru the beautiful islands of Oahu, Kauai, Hilo and Maui (Maui being our favorite). Came close to meeting up with Dennis Oliver (AHS Class of 1968) while on Kauai only to find out he was in San Diego area and would not be back until after we had left. Road trips to 2 different volcano craters on Kauai and Maui were amazing..worth the drive to both with outstanding views. On this cruise we met so many wonderful people from other parts of the world who we shared community tables in the specialty restaurants onboard for all of our meals. The Australians were absolutely our favorites with so much passion and respect for others as we had for them as well. We did manage to spend 4 extra days on the beaches of Wakikii, Oahu (excuse my spelling if wrong) as we made out way thru the island and also experiencing one of their wonderful surfing festivals. Anyway as October 13, 2015 is quickly approaching I am still up in the air (no pun intended for those who may think it was intentional) about retiring from JetBlue Airways. I still very much enjoy the rush and challenge of turning out an inbound and outbound aircraft (150 customers coming in and 150 going out) in 50 minutes and less. Working with the Pilots, Inflight personnel, ground crews, customers etc. is wonderful experience. So many cultures of wonderful and warm individuals makes it hard to give up knowing that another phase of my life will be behind me. However on the plus side, retirement (2nd and final one) will open up our desire to travel on an international level with unlimited restrictions pertaining to when we will have to return. Aside fr...Expand for more
om what is written above, Annette and I are both in what appears to be the best of health, all of our children have successful and solid marriages / relationships and doing quite well in their chosen careers. Life continues to get better as time passes. Looking forward to whatever tomorrow brings us as we enjoy today to the fullest. So for now...take care and our best to you and your families and hope all is well. Note: As of this past October 13th 2015 I am now eligible to retire from JetBlue but will carefully give it a lot of thought before making my final decision for either late 2015 or sometime in 2016. Update: Today is December 26, 2015 ....Has a wonderful Christmas holiday of course since all of our children and their spouses, along with our granddaughter Bethany and other family members and friends were here to join us. The food and decorating preparations were well worth the effort as we started on Tuesday and managed to pull off another successful holiday for everyone. Now that all the clean up is done, presents sorted out and put away I am sitting here trying to think of what I need or want to do next. My retirement from JetBlue is schedule for January of 2016 with a buy-out offer, however when driving yesterday I spotted a piece of property I am interested in as another investment for ourselves. I am sure Annette will say go for it since I enjoy the challenge of making things work without our finances...as long as they do not interfere with our travel plans. In the past two weeks we managed to get away to St. George, Utah and Portland, Oregon while the weather was good. San Antonio, Texas (south of Austin) should be within our plans next week or so with a 3 hour drive north of Austin to visit our son Garrett and his wife just outside of Dallas, Texas. Other than that not much change in our lifestyle worth mentioning. Health and attitude are both headed in the right direction which makes every day just as rewarding as the previous. Hope to hear from a few out there from my AHS past in hopes that all are doing well and enjoying life as I am. Update: January 23, 2016 Last Monday (January 18,2016) I completed my last flight as a gate agent with JetBlue Airways which resulted in my achieving my 10 year goal and receive another retiree status with lifetime flights benefits which now allows for Annette and myself to freely travel throughout the world, not only on JetBlue, but other carriers as well. To celebrate this event in our lives, we now have plans to take our first transatlantic cruise on Celebrity (our favorite) after 9 domestic cruises) from Fort Lauderdale to Rome, Italy in early April. Since I now longer have a work schedule tying me down and Annette is able to close her business as a Long Arm Quilter, we will after our 13 day cruise with 4 stops, remain in Europe and visit several countries and a few friends we have met along the way. I will be posting photos of our trip as we work ourselves thru this well deserved vacation over the time period of approximately 1-2 months. By the way..the photo of myself sitting in the first officer seat of an Airbus 320 was taken on the New Years Eve of 2015 whereas I boarded and closed my last flight of almost 150 customers and sent it out early once again. Although I do possess a pilots license and qualified for a Cessna 150, 152, 172 and Warrior 140, I am far from qualified for flying anything commercial. Some dreams come close...and in my book close works under these circumstances.Life is great and continues to get better since my old high school days. Update:April 15, 2016 After acquiring another retirement (January 18th) after 10 years with JetBlue Airways, Annette and I decided to celebrate the event along with our 40th wedding anniversary (yep...1st. marriage) by cruising 2 weeks on Celebrity Cruise Line out of Fort Lauderdale into Italy. Stops along the way included Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain which met with wonderful photos and memories. After leaving ship later this morning we will spend a week in Rome and also utilizing Eurorail for our day long trips down south to Naples and north to Florence. After leaving Italy we plan on moving northbound thru Austria, Germany, then west to France and possibly England. At this point we have no scheduled return date so our plans provide us with a great deal of flexibility. Our minimum stay in Europe at this point will be around 3 additional weeks hoping to visit Boston, Maine, Dallas and Austin, Texas on our way back towards home. Well aside from that you are most welcome to view my FB page listed as George Morales to enjoy photos posted there of our travels by way of sea and land. Update: April 28, 2016 After leaving for Orlando, Florida March 20th, then drive to Fort Lauderdale a few days later and boarding a ship all went well thru the entire trip. Unfortunately we received news regarding my uncle (youngest brother of my father) had passed away. Since we had already done 2 weeks cruising, almost a week in Rome and Florence, Italy and had boarding Lufthansa to get us to Hamburg, Germany, we decided to cut our trip short and return home for the services. We did manage to tour Hamburg, Wolfsburg and Fresoythe, Germany as I had made arrangements to rent a car and drive the autobahn (200 KM is great...125 mph U.S. speed). Prior to leaving we spent time with our somewhat adopted daughter and her family which made for icing on the cake. Authentic home cooked German meal prepared by her mother and sisters as well as a tour of a nearby country museum depicting life in Germany in the late 1800s. Since our itinerary had changed, we chose to fly back to the states on AirBerlin by way of Hamburg to Dusseldorf then JFK airport in New York. Now being in familiar territory we jumped on my old airline Jetblue and flew non-stop back to LGB (Long Beach Airport). 14 hours of flying in one day is hard, but felt good when we landed and ended up back at home late Sunday afternoon. The treated extended to Annette and myself by the airline personnel was exceptional. Looking forward to another international trip..either China or down under. Take care I have posted a lot of photos of our trip to Europe on FB . Enjoy and take care. 7-12-2016 Just returned from weekend trip to Portland, Oregon where we celebrated out 40th wedding anniversary...lots of driving, taking in several sites and shopping. Had great dinner at TADS in Troutdale..a must stop every time we are in the area. Managed to hit a few fabric stores for Annette and an Apple store for myself. Enjoyed Sunday morning by driving over to Vancouver, Washington side for farmers market and take in more sites. Today being Tuesday, I updated and checked ourselves in for our cruise to Alaska by way of Seattle this coming Friday...which means we fly back up in two days to give us wiggle room one day early before sailing out again. We have been up there several times before, but this trip is just a simple getaway for us from Annettes quilting business and my helping my daughter and her husband with the house they just bought. Almost forgot, daughter Jessica and husband Rick expecting baby boy (our second grandchild) in mid October. So many changes taking place this year, but all for good reasons. 7-26-2016 Fantastic trip via cruise to Alaska with side trip of aerial view of mountains and glaciers out of Skagway, Alaska in a Cessna 206. Appears the pilot who works for Hawaiian Airlines and myself had a lot in common as well as acquaintances with JetBlue as well. Riding up front in the right seat of the cockpit brought back memories of my old flying days, but not enough for me to go back and get updated checkout and recertified for my BFR (bi-annual flight review) to pilot aircraft again. Those days are way behind me as I have found many other ways to occupy my time. Heading back to Portland, Oregon in week and a half for the Hillsboro, Oregon Air Show. I still have a bit of a bug in me for flying, but mostly hanging our static displays and taking photos as well as talking to other pilots. Since August will be mostly down time for us, we will be more than ready for a repositioning cruise in late September which will start off with an Amtrak ride along the west coast of Washington to British Columbia Canada and enjoy Vancouver, Victoria, San Francisco and finally Los Angeles. Can't complain about life too much other than it has been quite rewarding in so many ways and turned out so much better for me after graduation in 1970. The only sad part has been reading about losing close friends from AHS who have passed away too early in life. Update: 10-26-2016 After a year and a half as intern/non contract employee, youngest son Greg completed his day long interview and drove down from SFO to give us the wonderful news is that he is now a full time contract employee of "GOOGLE" up in the bay area. This was quite an accomplishment and dream come thru after completing his Masters at Long Beach State, having worked for NASA and U.S. Air Force on various projects. Daughter Jessica with the help of husband Rick delivered a healthy and beautiful baby boy last Saturday (10-22-2016) and everyone is doing fine after returning home the following Monday. This makes for two grandchildren with oldest son Jeremy and wife Alisson expecting another baby girl in March of 2017. Son Garrett has teamed up with former classmate from his physical therapy Doctorate program and now successfully setting up their own business in and around Dallas, Texas. Annette has decided to downsize her out of home business so that we will be able to make more time for grandchildren and hopefully more international travel and gravitate away from domestic. Update February 2018: Purchased our travel trailer in Portland, Oregon for road trip last July. Bucket list whittling down with 2 week away trip cruising from Osaka, Japan to Hong Kong, China on the Cunard Queen Elizabeth in mid March of this year.

This was my view after jumping out of a C-141 at 1250 feet way back in 1971. This aircraft would have been following the aircraft that I was in as I was already down a few hundred feet
Todays is 3 years retired from jetBlue airlines. Closed my last flight (Flight 14...LGB to JFK) on December 31, 2015 which was also my last day actively working with my actual day off the books at the days end of January 18
