George's Story
Well, being a slow learner I screwed around in high school and got directed toward college when I saw my girl friend and now wife, Judy (Watkins), heading to SF State. I followed her but got rejected by the school (they did not like all of the "F's" on my El Cerrito HS transcript) so I went to CCJC for a year; then to SF State for a year; then back to CCJC for a semester; then to SJ State. In 1965, Judy and I were married and I graduated from SJ State in 1966. I worked at Lockheed, Sunnyvale for a year - did not like it - back to school for post grad - after 6 months of that we moved to Orangevale. CA and I got a job selling video equipment for 1 1/2 years - did not like that either - I thought that maybe I just didn't like working!!! - Somewhat disgruntled I went back to grad school and finished - I started thinking that I might want to teach but I couldn't get a full-time teaching job so I took a job as an assistant golf pro and Sunset Whitney GC in Rocklin, CA. - Lo and behold after 8 months of that, a position opened up for an intermediate school teacher in Santa Clara, CA. - I interviewed and they hired me (Mr. Green & Mr. Rust would have been sick)- anyhow, we packed our bags and moved back to San Jose and within days I fell in love with teaching and coaching - I taught for 33 years (intermediate, high school, and college) and I enjoyed it until the last minute of the last day.
We have 2 kids, Vince (married/no kids) and Laura (single), Vince does graphic arts for movies and TV shows at Warner ...Expand for more
Bros., Burbank, CA and Laura owns and operates clothing and furniture stores in Jackson, CA and Nevada City, CA.
When the 2 kids moved out Judy opened a clothing store in Cameron Park, CA (Land of Awes) in 1993 which she moved to Placerville, CA some years later. She recently sold the store and we both have been helping Laura with her stores over the last few years. Judy at times, especially in October (Halloween), will work the store(s)for days or weeks with Laura. Though it can get lonely for me, I get a lot of time with my pals at football games or the golf course. She thoroughly enjoys people and helping them pick their attire so I just batch it for awhile.
I coached and played basketball for years but was finally convinced (by Judy) to give up the playing part after many subsequent injuries - my pride was probably hurt more than my body however. So, my competitive efforts turned back to golf. I still play, but I am being humbled now in this game also. Consequently, I have turned back to music and playing the piano. I have a great music program (Logic Studio) and a Mac and am on my 4th CD. I really enjoy arranging and playing songs that have been in my head for so many years.
We back-packed 9 countries in Europe and love to travel but if their is one thing in life that we regret it is not having grand kids. Those of you that have them are really blessed.
Wow, the years have flown by - 50 is hard to believe - we love to hear about others lives so please tell us your story also.
