George's Story
Life
I was born and grew up at Canoe in
Breathitt County, KY. I attended
Beech Grove Elementary. My favorite memories involve being
introduced to the wonderful world
of books, the great friends I grew
up with and the great times we had.
Some of the greatest days of my life were spent running through the hills and swimming and boating
on the Middle Fork of the KY River.
I attended Breathitt High School, worked a year in Ohio in a steel mill, then entered the USMC. I attended training in California, including 6 months at Defense Language Institute. I spent a year in Viet Nam, and two more years in California. I attended Lees College in Jackson, worked 3 years for the Ky Transportation Cabinet, a few years in construction, and a career with theKy Division of Forestry ( 20+ years). Along the way I married Lucy Johnson and have one son, Hunter, and 2 step-children, Bobby and Michelle, both of whom are married. During my years with the KDF I have finished school at KY State University.
School
I was 13 years old when I began my
Freshman year at Breathitt High School. I was small, certainly one of the smallest students at school. True to pattern, I was cocky and agressive. I liked History, girls, rock and roll, and
being with my friends. These were indeed my "Glory Days". Every day
was an adventure filled with new discoveries. I think these are the days and the time of life we all would like to recapture. Good memories will have to do.

Workplace
I graduated from BHS at the age of 17, decided I was not ready for college and went north to Cincinnati. I lied about my age and went to work at Stacy's Mfg. Co.. This was ...Expand for more
a steel mill with all the trimmings, hard work, noisy, and dirty. I worked here for a year. At this time (1968)
the war in Viet Nam was going full-blast. I joined the USMC for 4 years, the toughest 4 years of my life. After completing my service term, I attended Lees College for 2 years and went to work for the KY Transportation Cabinet in Jackson as a surveyor. I did not like this job but stuck it out for 3 years. In 1980, I went into the construction field with my older brother. He had a small home improvement company and I did like working outside. Still dissatisfied, I applied for and was
hired by the KY Division of Forestry as a Forest Ranger in Breathitt County. After several years, I was promoted to District Ranger, and then to District Forester, the position I hold today. I had finally found my calling. Our job is to protect, improve, renew and enhance the forestland of KY. I am the senior supervisor in a district covering 9 counties that contain 1.5 million acres of forestland. I am charged with supervising all forestry operations including forest fire suppression, forest fire prevention, resource education, forest management, law enforcement, and inspection of all timber harvest operations. While employed by the KDF I have completed school at Kentucky State University as a Certified Public Manager. This career is immensely rewarding in many ways. We are the front line in protecting and preserving our natural resources for ourselves, our children, and their children.
