George's Story

Life Back in 1957 when I was nine, I started pitching baseball for the Monroe, Louisiana Police Department Little League Baseball team. My daddy doubled as a cop and my team coach. He did both for 20 years. He taught me if I worked hard, practiced and became a part of the team, that I would have a lot of fun and win a lot of ballgames. I did, I had a lot of fun, stuck out a lot of batters, and won a lot of ballgames. Those were the days that were. Memories don't just happen. Somebody has to make them happen. Daddy always said, "If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right the first time." Daddy taught me how to skin a buck and run a trotline. He taught me that all men and women are created equal and deserve to be treated equally. "Thy all put on their pants just like you, son; one leg at a time." I reckon I been mighty lucky. I have been might near around the world. I drank Guinness Extra Stout in pubs in England, Scotland, and Ireland. I stood out in the rain in Sherwood Forest and watched the Queen of England step out onto a balcony and wave to the crowd. I walked side by side with Richard Nixon and Ronald Regan in Florida. I set in a dressing room with Ronnie Millsap, then walked out backstage and watched him sing. I have seen many LSU games. Wherever I go, whatever I do, I meet a lot of people and we try to make friends and have fun. From 1962 to 1966 I played defensive tackle or nose guard (well I was on the team) for the Neville High School Fighting Tigers. I wore black and gold. Bill Ruple, Charlie Brown, Chick Childress, and Buck Stewart were the coaches. They impressed upon us that if we gave it 110% effort, we would have a lot of fun and win a lot of ballgames. They said a quitter never wins and a winner never quits. Their philosophy must have worked, because I reckon they won more state championships than any other football coaches in Louisiana history. These people, my Daddy, and the other coaches left a huge impact on my life. When I conduct a smoke school, I give it 110%, just a little extra effort. portunity to meet you and maybe teach you a little something about visible emissions evaluation, environmental protection, and industrial hygiene. I am hoping that maybe we can have a little fun while we are learning, and maybe I can leave just a little impact, make a little memory. Maybe we can be friends and maybe we can go fishing. That would be nice. I have been involved with Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration programs since 1976, when I was in the United States Air Force. I left the Air Force in 1883 to spend more time with my Daddy after he had his first heart attack. I took a job with Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) down in Baton Rouge. Thanks in part to Daddy's friendship with Governors Edwin Edwards and John McKeithan. I started out as an air quality inspector. One day a plant manager asked me if I had any friends. "Nobody likes to see your truck drive through the gates of this plant." Well, I tried hard for days and I couldn't come up with a single friend. Not one. So I took over smoke school for LDEQ. I will admit, it was the lowest job on the totem pole, but I made lots of friends. I retired from LDEQ in 2001 and set up a private enterprise conducting smoke school. I guess I heard a voice say, "Build it and they will come." I have been conducting smoke school visible emissions training for 20 years. Dang, it seems like yesterday. I have issued over 8,000 EPA Method 9 certificates and I still love it. You will too. Presently I personally conduct regularly scheduled semiannual smoke schools in Indiana, Virginia, Alabama, Florida, New York, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Kentucky. I will go anywhere you suggest where the fish might bite, I may make a couple more friends, and I can attract at least 12 people to train. I do love America and I love seeing her.
