George's Story

Life How in the world do you condense 50 years into a few words. I joined the Army to get out of Wasco and now find myself happily ensconced in a small town over in the Salinas valley. It's amazing how many of my school mates still live in California. I stayed in the Army until a little after Vietnam where I served three tours. Tough place to make a living. I am now retired from the service and feel anyone looking for a good foundation for life should consider the military. Almost everything i have is due to my time in the service. I wasn't doing too well with self discipline when i was in high school but I seemed to thrive in the Army. I was an enlisted man for six years and then went to Officers candidate School and became an officer and gentleman. One of the great things in my life was for my folks to see me as an officer. After i got out i joined the sheriff's department here in Monterey County. After driving around for a few years and gaining about 50 pounds I knew that was not the life for me. I bought a small gun shop and became a gunsmith. My store burned down and even though I relocated I never recovered financially. It affected my marriage to a young lady I had met in Georgia. After fathering a young girl we divorced. My daughter is now 31 and chose to live with me after she gained her majority. She lives now in Salinas and has given me two wonderful grandchildren. I'm not as good a grandparent as i would like because i met and married a much younger lady and we had two boys together. they are now 13 and 11. They are the joy of my life and now that i am almost retired I spend all my time making sure they become good men. Their names are Austin and Reed. they both love and race motorcycles and sports of any kind. I race in the super senior class at the Ricky Graham Memorial race held in King City, CA. once a year. I think they are proud of me for still having enough nerve to get out there and race. I don't try as hard to win as I once did but I still enjoy riding around the track and sliding once in a while. I still broker produce, write columns for the local paper and occasionally for WASCOTIMES.COM. I sell produce related packing supplies and photograph weddings when I find some one who can't afford an big time photographer. More later....As I started to write more about my life I was going over the names of the folks on this site. Girls and guys that I had known. It occurred to me that I was once in love with a lot of the girls posted herein. Of course the fact that high school was such a stressful time for me is no excuse but for some reason i just never got around to telling those ladies how much they meant to me when i was younger. I guess the most treasured girl, the one I really wanted to like me was carol berensen. Well, that didn't work out for many reasons. The love of my life was Sue whitworth. her mom didn't care for me too much but we were still in love. In later years her mother and mine became very close friends and of course my mom kept her informed of my success'. I think she left out the low points. I see so many names that bring back so many memories. The dances after the football games, cruising around 7th Street, Hoyt's, Chuck's dairy delite. there were so many cool places to cruise and be seen when you didn't have much money and just wanted o be a teen. i think the movie, American graffiti got it as close as they could in a movie. if you haven't seen it lately you should check it out of the rental store. My brother Cedric still lives in Wasco and keeps me up on what has been happening. It seems that nothing much changes. Just keeps getting bigger. Who hasn't parked out by one of the reservoirs to spoon with their girl? Who hasn't hurt someone back in those days that they didn't wish they could apologize to now? I'm getting older but I'm fighting ll the way. God will get me but not until after a struggle. Guess if you are reading this you remember the older simpler times. God Bless you and yours. WW My wife read my post and asked me to point out that not only do i live in a small town I am the mayor. How about that for a poor boy that stayed on the...Expand for more
wrong side of the tracks? I got into politics with a dare from one of the guys from church. he said he thought I could help the town. i ran for councilman and was elected by 6 votes. This, after I decided that i really didn't want to get involved and withdrew my name from the contest. It was just that i knew so many people that they voted for me anyway. After 6 years as a councilman i was elected mayor. Yeah, I guess i am pretty proud of that fact. You can google me and see what other committees I'm on. You know, I made a lot of mistakes growing up but if God came and said i could live my life over it would have to start after high school. I'm constantly telling my boys that it is only 4 years. You don't have any fun in life until after high school. At least that has been my experience. College or the Army it is all the same. You are coming of age and have to make your mark in the world. I sure hope they are listening to me. Since i started this diatribe my oldest son is going into 10th grade. The younger one will enter 8th. They area handful but they are really good kids. Watch out for all the kids they need all the help they can get today. WW 1/17/09 I celebrated my 65th birthday witha party at a winery. It was a blast. My wife set it up and I had about 75 people attend. t was rtock and roll all the way. A lot of my friends that like to go to a party and talk had to leave cause this was a party where drinking and dancing was the order of the day. The first song was "Bad to the Bone" and it got hotter after that. I guess when you try to explain something that was really cool to you it's hard to make folks understand. But I wanted this to be a party like we had when we were young. Levi's and pullover shirts. The ladies looked beautiful and the music was hot. I didn't sit down the whole night. I look forward to another one but it will probably have to wait until I'm 70. My kids said it was a great party and they are the experts. MY boys are nothing like I was. They are very popular and into sports. Good grades and nice kids. I got an email from soemone the other day. She had seen my profile and wanted to know which of the Worthy's I was. Shr knewRoger and Woody but didn't know a George. When I told her I was Woody, in an other life she said she remembered me and my foul mouth. Boy! I don't mind being remembered for being but for ma foul mouth? I did a lot of things but I don't remember cussing a lot. Maybe it was something else. If you have a memory of me that is different maybe you could share. 2/2/09 Well, I just cleebrated my 65th birthday. It was great!! My wife set it up at a local winery and we had about eighty people show up. My brother Cedric, who still lives in Wasco, brought over a friend and they joined soem guests that came from as far away as Florida. Man it was terrific. A couple of Vodka martinis and a few Coronas and i danced every dance. Some things got a little fuzzy but it was the most fun i have had in the past twenty years. The DJ was an old friend and former employee and she had her sh... er ah.. stuff together. She played OUR type of rock and roll and the evening flew by. You should have been there. Everyone that attended said it had been years since they had danced like that. Cedric, who is now sober, said he didn't even knowe he could dance without drinking. Boy! It was fun. I hope to do it again next year and every year until I'm too old. Maybe next year we can all be there.Let me have your email address if you wantto come. Anyone that says they don't live their life over, through their kids is smoking crack. I am so happy to have had my two boys as late in life as I did. They are proof that things can change in one generation. Both in all the sports, both on honor roll, both handsome and gods and both love their parents. Damn! I am blessed. I got the information about the reunion in October and will be seeing you guys. My wife will come and my boys really want to as they love to hear scandelous stories about their dad. So, I'll probably leave them atr home. My 33 year old dugfhter has already told them of my nefarious past, at least the part she knows.
