George's Story
Life has been good to me. After High School I joined the Army and got to travel across the country performing in the Forces Command Band as a French Horn player. I served over seven years in the Army Band and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The best part was meeting and marrying my wife of thirty-four years, Mary who was also in the Women's Army Corps Band. In 1979 it was time to leave the Army and finally go to college.
I began my college at Clayton Junior College and later transferred to Georgia State University where I participated in ROTC and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the regular Army. I re-entered active duty in 1984 and served another 20 (+) years as a Transportation Corps Officer. I served in Heidelberg twice, Mannhiem and Wuerzburg for a total of eight years in Germany. I served three stateside tours: three in Virginia and one year in school at Ft Leavenworth, KS. I commanded a boat company during Desert Storm and spent time in Dammam, Al Jubail, and Kuwait City. I commanded a second Boat Company during Operation Restore Hope and was among the first American troops in Somalia serving in Mogadishu, Kismayo, and Mombasa, Kenya. Later on in my career, I waited to cross the Sava River with the 1st Armored Division going into Bosnia. Later ...Expand for more
I served in Skopje, Macedonia at a place called Camp Able Sentry, and went into Kosovo with the 1st Infantry Division before the American bases, Camp Bondsteel and Montieth, were bulit. I also served in several other garden spots around the globe to include multiple trips to Kuwait, Africa a few times, and Korea.
Being military we had the opportunity to do some pleasure traveling to places like Russia, England, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech, Poland, and France and several other places. Did I mention Alaska? And, I would do it all again.
I retired from active duty in 2004 and began work as a Department of the Army Civilian at Ft Eustis, VA where I am the Department Chair for the Transportation Officer Basic and Advanced courses and oversee the Locomotive Engineer Certification Program for the Department of Defense and I also oversee the Army Driver Standardization Office.
Mary and I live in Williamsburg, VA. We're both dog lovers and have had a variety of dogs over the years. Presently we're on our third time around with Brittany Spaniels; we also have a 15 year old Dobermann Mix named Larry.
I would love to hear from old school friends. Let me know where life has taken you. I hope you're all doing well.
